Psalms: A Book About Praise
The book of Psalms is called Tehillim in Hebrew. This word means “praises.”
The Psalms teach us to praise God and thank Him for all He does for us.
God is powerful and merciful. He loves us and helps us. We cannot pay Him back for all His blessings, but we can show Him that we are thankful.
We can praise God in many ways:
- 🎵 Sing songs about Him.
- 🙏 Pray and thank Him.
- ❤️ Follow His teachings.
- 🗣️ Share our testimony about Him.
When we read the Psalms, we can learn more about God and feel closer to Him.
Main idea: The Psalms teach us to praise God, thank Him, and follow Him.

Ideas for Learning at Home and Church
with MATCHING ACTIVITIES
THE SPIRIT COMFORTS US
The Lord can comfort me in my suffering.
Sometimes we feel worried, lonely, or sad, especially when we are going through hard things. Psalm 102 talks about these kinds of feelings.
Read Psalm 102:12–28, Psalm 103, and Psalm 116. Look for words that help you remember that God loves you and will help you.
When you are having a hard time, you can pray to Heavenly Father and ask Him for help. You can trust Him and remember that you are not alone.
You could:
- Find a verse that gives you hope.
- Mark it in your scriptures.
- Try to memorize it.
- Share it with someone who might need encouragement.
Remember: When you feel worried, sad, or alone, you can call upon the Lord. He hears your prayers and can give you peace and strength.
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
The Lord comforts me and gives me hope.
- Read Psalm 102:1–2 together.
- These verses teach us that we can pray to God when we are sad, worried, or having problems.
- God hears our prayers and can help us feel peace, comfort, and hope.
- Talk about a time when you needed help. Did you pray? How did you feel afterward?
- Remember: We can always talk to Heavenly Father. He hears us and loves us.
LIFE & MINISTERY OF JESUS
Jesus Christ fulfilled prophecies from the Psalms.
The Psalms contain passages that point toward the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Here are a few examples:

Psalm 118:25–26 (see Matthew 21:9)
What do these verses teach you about Jesus Christ? Why is it important to know this about Him?
EXAMPLE (one scripture about Jesus that He is both KING and PRIEST)
Psalm 110 brings together two offices that were normally distinct:
- King — Jesus rules with divine authority.
- Priest — Jesus represents His people before God and provides the basis for their reconciliation with God.
GOD GUIDES ME
God’s word will keep me on His path.
The Psalms are songs and prayers found in the Bible. Some of them told about Jesus Christ long before He was born.
Here are some important things the Psalms teach us about Jesus:
- Jesus is a King. 👑
He has power and authority from God and will rule with love and righteousness. - Jesus is a Priest. 🙏
He helps us come closer to Heavenly Father. Through Jesus, we can repent and be forgiven. - Jesus is the Savior. ❤️
The Psalms taught that Jesus would be rejected by some people, but He would become very important in God’s plan. - Jesus is the promised Messiah.
The Psalms helped people understand that God would send a Savior.
Easy way to remember
Jesus is our King 👑, our Priest 🙏, and our Savior ❤️.
Question for the children
What do these scriptures teach us about Jesus?
They teach us that Jesus has power, loves us, helps us return to Heavenly Father, and is our Savior.
Why is this important?
Because knowing who Jesus is helps us trust Him, love Him, and follow His example.

“In your journey through life, you meet many obstacles and make some mistakes. Scriptural guidance helps you to recognize error and make the necessary correction. You stop going in the wrong direction. You carefully study the scriptural road map. Then you proceed with repentance and restitution required to get on the ‘strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life’ [2 Nephi 31:18]” (“Living by Scriptural Guidance,” Ensign, Nov. 2000, 17).

IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
God’s word is like a light.
- Talk about being in the dark. Ask your children what it feels like when they cannot see. What things are hard to do in the dark? Let them try drawing a picture with their eyes closed. Then read Psalm 119:105. What does it teach us about God’s word? How is God’s word like a light?
- God helps us know which way to go. Read Psalm 119:47–48, Psalm 119:105, 1 Nephi 11:25, and 2 Nephi 31:20. What has Heavenly Father given us to help us stay on the right path? What can we do to follow God?
- Look at pictures and sing. Look at pictures of the things talked about in Psalm 119:105. Put the pictures in the right order as you read the verse. You could also sing “Teach Me to Walk in the Light” or “I Will Walk with Jesus.”
Simple message: God’s word is like a light. It helps us know where to go and helps us choose the right path.
POWER OF THE LORD
The Lord is more powerful than any idol.
God is much more powerful than anything else.
In Psalm 135, the psalmist explains that idols are just things made by people. They cannot see, hear, or speak.
Sometimes, we can treat things like idols when we trust them more than God. For example:
- 📱 Our phones
- 💰 Money
- 🎮 Video games
- 🏆 Being popular
- ⭐ Being really good at something
These things can be useful or fun, but they cannot do what God can do.
❤️ What can God do?
God can:
- Create the world.
- Help us when we are scared.
- Answer our prayers.
- Give us strength.
- Help and protect us.
- Love us no matter what.
Simple answer to the question:
I can trust God because He is powerful and loves me. He has helped me, answered my prayers, and given me strength when I needed it. I want to trust Him more than things that cannot really help me.
GOD KNOWS ME
The Lord knows my heart.
Psalm 139 teaches us that God knows everything about us. He knows our thoughts, feelings, choices, strengths, and weaknesses. He is always aware of us and loves us.
Knowing that God knows me helps me make good choices. I can pray to Him, ask for help, and try to do what is right. It also reminds me that I am never alone.
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ know us and love us.
👀 God knows me
Psalm 139 teaches us that God knows everything about us.
He knows:
- 😊 What makes us happy
- 😢 When we feel sad
- ❤️ What we love
- 💭 What we are thinking
- 🏃 What we do each day
- 🌟 What we can become
Even though we cannot see Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, They know us perfectly and love us very much.
❤️ Activity: “Who Am I?”
Think of one child in the class and say a few things about them, such as:
“This person likes animals. They have a brother. They love to draw.”
Let the children guess who you are describing.
Then explain:
“If we know some things about each other, imagine how much Heavenly Father knows about us! He knows everything about us and loves us.”
🙏 God can help me
Psalm 139:23–24 teaches us that we can ask God to:
- Know our hearts
- Show us when we are doing something wrong
- Help us choose the right path
Ask the children:
“Why would we want Heavenly Father to help us?”
Because He loves us and wants to help us become happy and make good choices.
⭐ One thing to remember
“Heavenly Father and Jesus know me, love me, and will help me.”
PRAISE THE LORD
“Praise ye the Lord.”
“Praise ye the Lord.” means “Praise God!”
The Psalms teach us that we have many reasons to praise God:
- ❤️ God loves us.
- 🛡️ God protects us.
- 🌎 God created the world.
- 🙏 God answers our prayers.
- 😊 God gives us many blessings.
Why should we praise God?
We praise Him because He is good, loving, and worthy of our thanks.
How can we praise God?
- 🎵 Sing songs about Him.
- 🙏 Pray and thank Him.
- ❤️ Love and help other people.
- 📖 Learn about God from the scriptures.
- 🗣️ Tell others about His goodness.
Simple takeaway:
👉 We can praise God every day by thanking Him, singing to Him, praying, and doing good things.
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
I can praise the Lord.
Ask the children:
👉 “How do you feel when someone tells you, ‘You did a great job’?”
Explain:
“Praising someone means telling them something good about them or thanking them for what they do. We can praise Heavenly Father too!”
Read Psalm 146:6–9 together. Talk about some of the good things the Lord does:
- He made the earth and everything in it. 🌎
- He helps people who are sad or in need. ❤️
- He gives food to those who are hungry. 🍎
- He helps and protects us. 🙏
- He loves and cares for His children. 💕
Ask:
“What are some good things Heavenly Father and Jesus have done for you?”
Let each child share an answer.
Then ask:
“How can we praise Heavenly Father for all He does for us?”
Children might say:
- Pray and say thank you.
- Sing songs about Him. 🎵
- Be kind to others. 😊
- Keep His commandments.
- Tell others about His love.
Main message:
💛 We can praise the Lord by thanking Him, singing about Him, praying, and showing love to others.
