“I Will Declare What He Hath Done for My Soul”
Psalms 49–51; 61–66; 69–72; 77–78; 85–86
The people who wrote the Psalms shared their real feelings with God. Sometimes they felt sad, scared, sorry for their mistakes, or even alone. Sometimes they wondered if God had forgotten them. If you have ever felt that way, the Psalms can help you know you are not alone.
The Psalms also remind us that God is loving, kind, and powerful. The writers thanked Him, trusted Him, and were happy because He is merciful. They knew that everyone makes mistakes and has hard times, but the Lord is always ready to forgive us (Psalm 86:5).
Having faith in Jesus Christ doesn’t mean we will never feel afraid or sad. It means we know we can always turn to Him for help, comfort, and forgiveness.
SAVED BY REDEEMER
Redemption comes only through Jesus Christ.
Psalms 49 and 62 teach us to trust God.
Psalm 49 has an important message for everyone—rich or poor, young or old. Money and things cannot save us or make us live forever. Only God can do that.
Psalm 62 reminds us to be patient and trust God. He is our strength, our safe place, and our helper. We should not trust money, power, or other things more than we trust Him.
As you read these psalms, think about these questions:
- What are some things people trust instead of God?
- Why is God the best One to trust?
- How does knowing that Jesus Christ will help us live again make you feel?
Because of Jesus Christ, we can have hope. He has the power to save us, forgive us, and help us return to Heavenly Father.
HOPE FOR FORGIVENESS
Because of the Savior’s mercy, I can be forgiven.
King David wrote Psalm 51 after he knew he had done something wrong and asked God to forgive him. We all make mistakes, and we all need God’s forgiveness.
As you read Psalm 51, think about these questions:
- Which verses remind you of how you feel after making a bad choice?
- Which verses help you know that God will forgive you?
Look for words that teach you how to repent, or turn back to God. Make a list of what you find. See and DOWNLOAD Psalm 86:7 scripture poster/card set “In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.” (HERE, or below)
You can also read President Russell M. Nelson’s talk “We Can Do Better and Be Better” and add more ideas.
Think about how it feels when Jesus Christ forgives us. If it’s hard to explain, read Psalm 51:1–2, 7–12 and Psalm 85:2–9. You could also draw a picture of what forgiveness feels like or sing a song about the Savior, like “I Stand All Amazed.”

To repent, we need to believe that Jesus Christ can forgive us and that He wants to forgive us. As you read Psalm 86:5, 13, and 15, look for words that show how kind, loving, and forgiving Jesus is. How do these verses help you know that He is always ready to forgive you?

IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
When I make a wrong choice, Jesus can help me change.
To help your children learn about repentance from Psalm 51, draw a big heart on a piece of paper. Inside the heart, have them write or draw wrong choices that Satan tempts us to make. Then ask, “How can Jesus help us clean our hearts?”
Read Psalm 51:10 and 17 together. Look for the word “heart.” Talk about how Jesus can help us change when we repent. Then erase the wrong choices in the heart and write happy words like kind, loving, honest, forgiving, and obedient to show how Jesus helps us become better.
To help your children understand “a broken and a contrite heart” (Psalm 51:17), let them crack open an egg or a nut. Explain that the hard shell is like a heart that is closed. When we are humble and willing to change, we open our hearts to Heavenly Father and Jesus.
Look at a picture of Jesus together. Ask, “What words would you use to describe Jesus?” Then read Psalm 86:5, 13, and 15 to find words that describe Him. Talk about why it is comforting to know that Jesus is kind, loving, patient, and always ready to forgive us.
TELL OF JESUS
Psalms 51:13–15; 66:5–20; 71:15–24
My testimony of Jesus Christ can help others come unto Him.
Think about how you came to believe in Jesus Christ and how He helps you. As you read Psalms 51:13–15, 66:5–20, and 71:15–24, think about ways you can tell other people about God’s love and the wonderful things He has done.
What do you think it means to talk about God’s goodness and love every day? (See Psalm 71:24.)
If someone asked, “What has God done for you?” what would you say?
IDEAS:
When bearing testimony of Jesus Christ, you can share simple, personal ways you have seen God work in your life. If you are teaching children, these examples can help them think of their own experiences.
- God gave me life and loves me.
- He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to be my Savior.
- Jesus forgives me when I repent.
- God hears and answers my prayers.
- He gives me peace when I feel afraid or worried.
- He comforts me when I am sad.
- He helps me make good choices through the Holy Ghost.
- He gives me strength to do hard things.
- He blesses me with my family and friends.
- He protects me and watches over me each day.
- He teaches me through the scriptures.
- He helps me feel His love at church and at home.
- He forgives me and helps me become better.
- He blesses me with food, a home, and the things I need.
- He gives me hope because Jesus Christ was resurrected.
- He promises that I can live with Him again if I follow Jesus Christ.
Here is an example of a simple testimony:
“I know that Heavenly Father loves me. I know He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to be my Savior. Jesus helps me when I pray, comforts me when I am sad, and forgives me when I repent. I am thankful for the scriptures because they teach me about Him. I know Jesus lives, and because He lives, I can have hope and joy every day.”
For young children, you might ask:
- How has Jesus helped you?
- When have you felt Heavenly Father’s love?
- What is one blessing God has given you today?
- When has God answered one of your prayers?
- What do you love most about Jesus Christ?
These simple questions can help children recognize God’s blessings in their own lives and strengthen their testimonies of Jesus Christ.

*ALMA 26 TESTIMONY IDEAS
Book of Alma chapter 26 centers on the joy of sharing the gospel and the power of God to change lives. It is a speech by Ammon after years of missionary work among the Lamanites. While the chapter doesn’t use the modern phrase “share your testimony,” it strongly teaches principles about bearing witness to others.
Here are some of the main ideas:
- Share because of gratitude, not pride. Ammon rejoices in what God has done but is careful to give God the credit. He says, “I will boast of my God” (Alma 26:12), emphasizing that testimony points people to God rather than to ourselves.
- God can work through ordinary people. Ammon describes himself and his companions as weak instruments, yet God used them to accomplish great things (see verses 12–16). A testimony doesn’t have to be eloquent or impressive to have an impact.
- Love the people you serve. The sons of Mosiah endured hardship because they genuinely loved the Lamanites and wanted them to experience God’s mercy (verses 27–31). Sharing a testimony is presented as an act of love, not of winning an argument.
- Be patient and persistent. They experienced hunger, rejection, imprisonment, and suffering before seeing many people accept the gospel (verses 27–30). The chapter suggests that sharing faith often requires patience and faithfulness rather than expecting immediate results.
- Rejoice in others’ spiritual growth. Much of Ammon’s joy comes from seeing others come to know God and remain faithful (verses 11, 13). The focus is on helping others draw closer to God, not on personal recognition.
One verse that summarizes the spirit of testimony is Alma 26:16:
“Therefore, let us glory, yea, we will glory in the Lord; yea, we will rejoice, for our joy is full…”
This reflects the idea that testimony is ultimately about expressing what God has done and inviting others to come unto Him.
From a Latter-day Saint perspective, Alma 26 suggests that effective testimony sharing is:
- Centered on God.
- Motivated by love.
- Humble rather than self-promoting.
- Patient in the face of challenges.
- Joyful because of God’s work in people’s lives.
These principles are often applied both to formal missionary work and to everyday conversations where people naturally share their faith and personal experiences with God.

THE SPIRIT GUIDES
The Lord will help me in my time of need.
Sometimes we can feel far away from God or need His help very badly. Some of the Psalms talk about these feelings (see Psalms 63, 69, and 77).
As you read Psalms 63, 69, 77, and 78, think about these questions:
- What helped the people who wrote these Psalms feel hopeful and trust God again?
- How does remembering the good things God has done help you when you feel sad, scared, or worried? (See Psalm 77:11.)
- Psalm 78 tells about many amazing things God did for His people. As you read, think about which stories help you trust God and have hope in Him. (See Psalm 78:7.)
JESUS IS MY STRENGTH
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Jesus Is My Rock.
Draw pictures of the things in Psalm 61:2–3:
• How is Jesus like a big ROCK that keeps us safe? Jesus is like a rock because He is strong, steady, and always there for us. Just as a big rock can give us a safe place to stand, Jesus helps us feel safe, gives us strength, and teaches us the right way to live. We can trust Him even when life is difficult.
• How is He like a shelter that protects us? Jesus is like a shelter because He protects us, cares for us, and gives us comfort when we are afraid or going through hard times. Just like a shelter keeps us safe from storms, Jesus gives us love, peace, and strength. He helps us feel safe because we can trust Him.
• How is Jesus like a strong tower where we can feel safe? When we pray, follow Him, and trust Him, He gives us peace, helps us be brave, and is always with us. Just like a strong tower protects people from danger, Jesus protects our hearts and helps us when we are scared or sad.”
TALK ABOUT WAYS JESUS LOVES, HELPS, AND PROTECTS US EVERY DAY:
• Jesus loves us by always caring about us. He knows each of us by name and wants us to be happy. He forgives us when we repent and is always ready to help us.
• Jesus helps us by giving us the strength to do what is right. He answers our prayers, comforts us when we are sad or scared, and sends the Holy Ghost, our families, and other people to help us.
• Jesus protects us by watching over us. He helps us make good choices, warns us through the Holy Ghost when something is wrong, and gives us peace even when life is hard.
PRAYER ANSWERS
Heavenly Father hears and answers my prayers.

Many of the Psalms are prayers to Heavenly Father. As you read them with your children, show them something we use to talk to people who are far away, like a phone or a letter.
Then read Psalm 86:7 together.
Ask:
- How do we “call upon” Heavenly Father? (We pray to Him.)
- How does Heavenly Father answer our prayers?
Help your children understand that Heavenly Father always hears their prayers. He answers in His own way and at the right time. He may answer through peaceful feelings, the scriptures, the Holy Ghost, parents and leaders, or by helping things work out for our good.

IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
“I will remember the works of the Lord.”

Ask your children to tell about their favorite scripture stories. You can use pictures from the Gospel Art Book to help. Ask, “What do these stories teach us about Jesus?”
Read Psalm 66:16 together. Then take turns answering this question: “What has Jesus done for me?” Talk about ways He has helped you, blessed you, comforted you, or answered your prayers.
Next, read Psalms 77:11 and 78:6–7. Talk about what it means to remember the wonderful things the Lord has done. Share times when you have seen Jesus help your family.
Ask, “How does taking the sacrament help us remember Jesus every week?” Explain that the sacrament helps us think about Jesus, remember His love and sacrifice, and try to follow Him every day.

WAYS TO REMEMBER JESUS:
- Pray to Him every day.
- Read Bible stories about Jesus.
- Sing songs about Jesus.
- Go to church and learn about Him.
- Take the sacrament/communion (if appropriate in your faith) and think about Jesus.
- Be kind and help others like Jesus did.
- Forgive others when they make mistakes.
- Obey God’s commandments.
- Say thank you for the blessings He gives us.
- Look at pictures of Jesus and remember His love.
- Talk about Jesus with your family.
- Follow His example by sharing, loving, and serving others.
You could end by asking the children:
“Which one of these can you do today to remember Jesus?”
I can tell others about Jesus Christ.
Read Psalm 71:8 together.
Draw a big mouth. Help your children fill it with pictures or words about Jesus. They could draw or write things like:
- Jesus loves us (see drawing ideas below*)
- Jesus helps us.
- Jesus forgives us.
- Jesus teaches us.
- Jesus is our Savior.
Then pass around a picture of Jesus. When someone is holding the picture, they can say one thing they know about Him.
Talk together about this question:
How can we help other people know about Jesus?
Possible answers:

- Be kind and loving.
- Share our testimony.
- Invite them to church.
- Read the scriptures with them.

- This shows that Jesus loves every child.

- This teaches that Jesus loves and takes care of us.
- Jesus Helping Someone 🤲
- Jesus comforting a person who is sad or hurt.
- This reminds children that Jesus helps us when we need Him.
- Jesus Watching Over a Family 🏡
- A family praying together while Jesus stands nearby with open arms.
- This shows that Jesus loves our families and blesses our homes.
- A Heart with Jesus Inside ❤️
- Draw a large heart with Jesus in the middle.
- Around the heart, draw children, families, friends, animals, and the earth to show His love is for everyone.
For very young children (ages 3–7), the simplest and most meaningful picture is Jesus surrounded by happy children, because it clearly teaches the message: “Jesus loves me.” You can add the words:
