October 26–November 1: “I Will Turn Their Mourning into Joy”
Jeremiah 31–33; 36–39; Lamentations 1; 3
Jeremiah was a prophet who lived during a very difficult time. Many people were making bad choices and turning away from God. When God called Jeremiah to be a prophet, He told him that part of his job was to “root out” and “pull down” evil. But that wasn’t all! Jeremiah was also called to “build” and “plant.”
What does that mean?
Think about a garden. 🌱
If a garden is full of weeds, you first have to pull out the weeds. Then you can plant new seeds and help the garden grow.
Our lives can sometimes be like that garden.
- We might make a bad choice and need to fix it.
- We might feel sad because something difficult happened.
- We might need to stop doing something that is hurting us.
- Then we can choose to follow Jesus Christ and make better choices.
Jesus Christ helps us clean up the weeds and plant something new.
Jesus Christ can help us start again
Jeremiah taught about the Savior, Jesus Christ. He called Him “the Branch of righteousness.”
Jesus promised a “new covenant” with His people. This means that God wants us to choose to follow Him—not just on the outside, but in our hearts.
For example, it’s not enough to simply say, “I love Jesus.” We can show it by:
- Being kind to someone who feels lonely.
- Telling the truth even when it is hard.
- Forgiving someone who hurt us.
- Praying when we need help.
- Helping our family without being asked.
When we do these things, we are putting God’s teachings into our hearts.
What if we make mistakes?
We will all make mistakes. Sometimes we may feel sad, worried, or disappointed.
But God does not want us to stay sad forever. He can help us change, heal, and become better.
The Lord gave this beautiful promise:
“I will turn their mourning into joy.”
Example: Imagine you accidentally hurt a friend by saying something unkind. You might feel really bad. You can pray, say you’re sorry, and try to do better. With Jesus Christ’s help, that sad feeling can become a chance to learn, grow, and feel peace again.
Remember
🌱 God can help us start over.
❤️ Jesus Christ can change our hearts.
😊 Sad times do not last forever.
🙏 When we turn to God, He can bring us peace and joy.
Simple lesson: Even when our lives feel messy or broken, Jesus Christ can help us rebuild, grow, and find joy again.

When God called Jeremiah to be a prophet, He told him to help remove wickedness and wrong things. But Jeremiah also had another important job: to build and plant.
Jerusalem had been hurt badly because the people had turned away from God. Jeremiah taught that even when things seem broken, God can help us rebuild our lives.
Jesus Christ is like a strong, new branch that grows from a tree. He is the promised Savior. Through Him, God gives us a new covenant, or promise.
God wants us to do more than just look like we follow Him. He wants His teachings to be inside our hearts. We show that God is our God when we love Him, follow Him, and try to do what is right.
We will still make mistakes. Sometimes we will feel sad or have hard times. But God promises to help us. He can change our sadness into happiness and hope.
What can we learn?
- God can help us fix things when our lives feel broken.
- Jesus Christ can give us hope and a new beginning.
- God wants us to love Him from our hearts.
- Making mistakes does not mean God has stopped loving us.
- When we are sad, God can help turn our sorrow into joy.

BEING GOD’S CHOSEN
“They shall be my people, and I will be their God.”
The Israelites had broken their promises with God. But the Lord promised that He would make a new and lasting covenant with His people.
A covenant is a special promise between us and God. When we make covenants with Him, we promise to follow Him, and He promises to bless and help us.
God said that His people would belong to Him, and He would be their God. He also promised to put His law “in their hearts.” This means that as we follow God, His teachings can become part of who we are.
As you read these verses, think about:
- What does it mean to be one of God’s people?
- How can God’s teachings be in your heart?
- What does God promise when you make covenants with Him?
- How can making covenants help you become a better person?
- What promises have you made to God?
- How has God helped you keep those promises?
Remember: God loves His people. When we make and keep covenants with Him, He will help us, guide us, and stay with us.
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Heavenly Father and Jesus love me “with an everlasting love.”
God makes special covenants, or promises, with us. He wants us to remember our promises to Him and keep them.
Activity:
Draw a big heart on a piece of paper. Inside the heart, write or draw things you learn from Jeremiah 31:31–34 about making promises with God.
Talk about the promises we make when we are baptized. What does it mean to have these promises written in our hearts?
Remember: God loves us and will help us keep our promises to Him.

SCRIPTURE POWER
The scriptures have power to turn me away from evil.
The scriptures can help me choose what is right.
Why did the Lord tell Jeremiah to write down His words?
The Lord wanted people to hear His message. He hoped they would stop doing wrong things, repent, and choose to do what is right.
How did the people feel about Jeremiah’s words?
- The Lord: Wanted the people to hear His words and change their bad choices.
- Jeremiah: Obeyed the Lord and shared His message.
- Baruch: Helped Jeremiah by writing the Lord’s words and reading them to the people.
- Jehudi and King Jehoiakim: Did not want to listen. The king even cut up the scroll and burned it.
- Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah: Were worried about the king destroying the scroll and asked him not to burn it.
What can I learn?
The scriptures teach me what is right and help me recognize what is wrong. When I read them and follow their teachings, they can help me turn away from evil, repent, and make better choices.
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
The scriptures are the word of God.
Simple idea:
The scriptures are special books that teach us what God wants us to know. They can help us learn about Jesus Christ and make good choices.
👦 Example from Jeremiah 36
God told the prophet Jeremiah to write His words in a book. Jeremiah told Baruch what God had said, and Baruch wrote the words down.
Then Baruch read the words from the book to the people.
You can act out the story with your children:
- ✍️ Pretend to write God’s words in a book.
- 📖 Pretend to read the book.
- 👂 Have the children pretend to listen.
- ❤️ Talk about how God’s words can help us.
📚 Compare Two Books
Show your child a regular children’s book and the scriptures.
Ask:
- “What is different about these books?”
- “What makes the scriptures special?”
- “What can we learn from the scriptures?”
Example:
A children’s book might teach us about animals.
The scriptures teach us about God, Jesus Christ, and how to live happily.
❤️ Share a Favorite Scripture
Ask your child:
“What is your favorite scripture, and why?”
For example:
Child: “I like the story of Noah because God took care of Noah and his family.”
Parent: “That’s a great reason! The scriptures can remind us that God cares about us too.”

FOLLOW GOD’S PROPHET
Be firm in following God’s prophets.
King Zedekiah sometimes listened to Jeremiah, who was a prophet of God. But other times, he did not listen to him.
What can we learn?
- Zedekiah asked Jeremiah what God wanted him to do.
- But when Jeremiah’s message was difficult, Zedekiah did not always obey.
- Zedekiah was afraid of other people and worried about what they thought.
- Because he did not follow the Lord’s prophet, he and his people suffered.
Think about this:
What might have happened if Zedekiah and his people had always listened to Jeremiah and obeyed God?
Lesson:
We should listen to God’s prophets and follow their teachings, even when it is hard. God gives prophets to help us know what is right.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT
I can be bold in standing up for what is right.
Jeremiah was a prophet who taught the people what God wanted them to know. Some of the king’s leaders did not like what Jeremiah said. They put him in a dirty, deep hole called a dungeon. Jeremiah was stuck there and needed help.
A man named Ebed-melech saw what happened. He knew that leaving Jeremiah there was wrong, so he spoke up and helped him. Ebed-melech was brave, even though helping Jeremiah could have caused problems for him.
He found ropes and cloth and used them to carefully pull Jeremiah out of the dungeon.
What can we learn from Ebed-melech?
Ebed-melech teaches us that we can stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult or scary.
Examples:
- If someone is being bullied, you can tell an adult and help the person feel safe.
- If your friends want you to cheat on a test, you can say, “No, cheating is not right.”
- If someone is being left out, you can invite them to play with you.
- If you see someone being treated unfairly, you can kindly speak up.
The Lord blessed Ebed-melech because he chose to do what was right and trusted in Him.
Think about it:
What is one thing you could do this week to be brave like Ebed-melech and stand up for what is right?
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
I can stand up for what is right.
Ebed-melech was a brave man who helped the prophet Jeremiah. Some men had thrown Jeremiah into a deep, muddy pit. Ebed-melech knew this was wrong, so he spoke up and asked the king to let him help Jeremiah. He then helped pull Jeremiah out of the pit.
What can we learn from Ebed-melech?
Sometimes we need to be brave and stand up for what is right, even when it might be hard or scary.
Examples:
- If someone is being left out, you can invite them to play with you.
- If a friend is being treated unfairly, you can kindly say, “That isn’t right.”
- If someone tells you to do something wrong, you can say, “No, I want to choose what is right.”
- We can listen to and follow the teachings of our prophet because we believe he is called by God.
Ask the children:
“What is one thing you can do this week to stand up for what is right?”
“How can you be brave like Ebed-melech?”

SORROW FOR SIN (Repent)
The Lord can relieve the sorrow I experience because of sin.
God Can Help Us When We Feel Sad Because of Sin
The book of Lamentations contains poems written after Jerusalem and its temple were destroyed. The people were very sad because of what had happened.
The poems help us understand how much the people were hurting. They also teach us that there is always hope through Jesus Christ.
Sometimes we may feel sad, disappointed, or worried. We may even feel like our mistakes are too big to fix. But God wants us to know that we should never give up hope.
When we make mistakes and repent, Jesus Christ can forgive us and help us feel peace again. He loves us, even when we have done wrong.
President M. Russell Ballard taught that even when life feels very hard, we can always have hope. We can turn to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ for help.
Remember:
- God knows when we are hurting.
- Jesus Christ can help us overcome sin.
- We can repent and change.
- There is always hope through Jesus Christ.
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Lamentations 1:1–2, 16; 3:22–26
The Savior made it possible for me to be forgiven of my sins.
Simple explanation for children:
The people of Jerusalem had made many wrong choices and had not listened to God. Because they did not repent, Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed. The people were very sad.
Imagine that you lost your home because of a bad choice you made. How would you feel? You might feel sad, scared, or sorry.
But Lamentations 3:22–26 teaches us something wonderful: God is merciful, loving, and faithful. Even when we make mistakes, He gives us a way to return to Him through Jesus Christ.
❤️ What does Jesus Christ do for us?
Because of Jesus Christ, we can repent and be forgiven when we make wrong choices.
Example:
Imagine you say something mean to your brother or sister. You feel bad about it. You can:
- Tell Heavenly Father you’re sorry.
- Ask the person you hurt to forgive you.
- Try to make things right.
- Choose to do better next time.
Jesus Christ helps us as we repent. We don’t have to stay stuck in our mistakes.
🌈 A message of hope
You could tell the children:
“Sometimes I make mistakes, but Jesus Christ loves me. Because of Him, I can repent, be forgiven, and try again.”
Question to ask:
“Can you think of a time when you made a mistake and felt better after saying sorry and making things right?”
Simple takeaway:
👉 I can repent when I make mistakes, and Jesus Christ can forgive me and help me become better.
