Hosea 1–6; 10–14; Joel
The Lord’s covenant with Israel was like a marriage. It was meant to include commitment, loyalty, shared experiences, and wholehearted love. Unfortunately, the Israelites were not faithful to their covenant with the Lord.
But the Lord did not give up on them. Instead, He invited them to return to Him:
“I will invite you back” (Hosea 2:14–15).
He promised:
“I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness” (Hosea 2:19).
And:
“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely” (Hosea 14:4).
This shows that the Lord is merciful, loving, and willing to forgive us when we return to Him. His message is still the same for us today as we try to keep our covenants with love and devotion.
Joel taught:
“Turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness” (Joel 2:13).
These scriptures can help us think about our own relationship with the Lord. His faithfulness and love toward us can inspire us to be more faithful and devoted to Him.

TURN AWAY – TO TURN TO GOD
The Lord always invites me to return to Him.
Hosea’s marriage to Gomer was used as a powerful symbol of Israel’s relationship with the Lord. Israel had entered into a covenant with God, much like a husband and wife enter into a marriage covenant. Their covenant represented love, commitment, loyalty, and faithfulness.
When Israel worshipped other gods and turned away from the Lord, it was like being unfaithful to a spouse. Hosea 2:5–7, 13 shows that Israel pursued other things instead of the Lord, forgetting the One who had blessed and cared for them.
Yet the remarkable message of Hosea is that the Lord did not simply abandon His people. In Hosea 2:14–23, He speaks of drawing Israel back, speaking “comfortably” to her, restoring blessings, and renewing the covenant. This teaches me that the Lord’s correction is ultimately intended to bring us back to Him. His mercy is greater than our mistakes when we sincerely turn to Him.
I can show the Lord my love and loyalty by keeping my covenants, praying, studying His word, repenting when I fall short, serving others, and choosing Him over things that pull me away from Him.
“I will love them freely”
Hosea 14:4 says, “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely.”
To me, “love them freely” means that the Lord’s love isn’t something I have to earn by becoming perfect first. When I sincerely return to Him, He willingly receives me with love and mercy. Repentance isn’t merely punishment for doing wrong—it is an invitation to come home.
The plant imagery in Hosea 14:5–8 makes this especially beautiful. The Lord compares His blessings to things that grow, take root, blossom, spread, and bear fruit. Repentance can work the same way. When we turn back to God, He can help us become spiritually rooted and strong. Over time, His influence can bring peace, stability, growth, and good fruit into our lives.
What I take away
One of the most comforting lessons from Hosea is that turning away from God does not have to be the end of our story. The Lord continually invites us to return. His desire is to heal us, restore us, and love us freely.
A question I could ponder is:
“What is one thing I can turn away from today so that I can turn more fully toward the Lord?”

INNER & OUTER DEVOTION
Devotion to God must be felt inwardly, not just expressed outwardly.
The people in Hosea’s time were offering animal sacrifices, but they were not keeping more important commandments. What do you think it means that the Lord “desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings”? (Hosea 6:6). What do you think it means for righteousness to be like a cloud or dew? (see Hosea 6:4). What should our righteousness be like? (see Isaiah 48:18; 1 Nephi 2:9–10).
You could also read Matthew 9:10–13; 12:1–8 to see how the Savior used Hosea 6:6 during His ministry. How do these passages help you understand Hosea’s words?
When reading Joel 2:12–13, it may help to know that tearing one’s clothing was an outward sign of mourning or regret. How is changing our hearts different from simply tearing our clothes?

THE LORD’S SPIRIT
“I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh.”
- What similarities do you see between our day and the time Joel foresaw? What blessings did the Lord promise? Why are they especially important today? (Joel 2:1–2, 11, 18–32)
- Moroni taught Joseph Smith about Joel 2. How are Joel’s prophecies being fulfilled today? What does it mean that the Lord will “pour out [His] spirit upon all flesh”? (Joseph Smith—History 1:41; Joel 2:28–32; Acts 2:1–21)
- Why is personal revelation important for your spiritual survival?
- What can you do if you feel you aren’t receiving the Spirit? What did these people do to receive the Lord’s Spirit? (Mosiah 4:1–3, 19–20; 18:7–11; Helaman 6:34–36; Doctrine and Covenants 19:37–41)
- Elder Bednar taught that the Holy Ghost often comes quietly and gradually rather than through dramatic experiences. What does an “outpouring” of the Holy Ghost look like in your daily life?
- How can you better recognize the Spirit’s promptings? (Gary E. Stevenson, “Promptings of the Spirit”)
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
The Holy Ghost can guide me.
You can help children understand what it means for the Spirit to be “poured out” on us. Let them pour some water or another liquid into a cup. Then compare it with just a few drops. Ask them what they think it could mean for the Spirit to be “poured out” upon us.
Read Joel 2:28–29 together. Have the children say their own names instead of “your sons” and “your daughters.”
Then read these scriptures together:

Talk about how the Holy Ghost can help and guide us. Ask the children, “How can the Holy Ghost help you?”

IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
I can faithfully keep my covenants.
In the book of Hosea, the Lord compared His covenants with His people to a marriage.
Show your children a picture of a bride and groom. Talk about how a husband and wife should love, help, and be faithful to each other.
Read Hosea 2:19–20 together. Look for words that tell us how the Lord feels about us.
The Lord loves us and wants us to be faithful to Him.
We can show our love for the Lord by:
- Keeping our covenants.
- Praying and talking to Heavenly Father.
- Choosing to do what is right.
- Loving and helping others.
- Remembering Jesus Christ.
I can keep my covenants and show Heavenly Father that I love Him.

IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
“It is time to seek the Lord.”
This scripture teaches us that now is a good time to seek the Lord.
You can ask the children:
- “What does it mean to seek the Lord?”
- “When can we pray?”
- “When can we read the scriptures?”
- “When can we think about Jesus?”
Help the children understand that we can seek the Lord anytime and anywhere.
You could have the children draw a clock. On the clock, they can write or draw ways they can seek the Lord during the day—like praying, reading scriptures, being kind, or helping someone.
You can also have the children act out the scripture. Pretend to:
- Plant a seed.
- Pick vegetables.
- Feel the rain.
Explain that when we plant seeds, they can grow and give us good food. In the same way, when we choose to do what is right and seek the Lord, He can bless us.
Ask the children:
“What blessings has the Lord given you?”
Remind them: It is always a good time to seek the Lord!
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer.
Read Hosea 13:4 with the children. Teach them that Jesus Christ is our Savior. He is the only One who can save us from sin and death.
Show the children pictures of different people, including Jesus. Let the children take turns pointing to Jesus, the One who has the power to save us.
Tell the children how you feel about Jesus Christ and how He helps us.
Read Hosea 13:4, 14 together. Ask the children to find words that tell us about Jesus Christ. What do these words teach us about Him?
You can also use the Guide to the Scriptures to find other scriptures that teach us that Jesus is our Savior and Redeemer.
Ask the children:
- How do you feel about Jesus?
- Why are you thankful for Him?
- How does Jesus help you?
Remind the children that Jesus Christ loves us and gave His life for us. He is our Savior and Redeemer.
