September 21–27: “A Marvellous Work and a Wonder”
Isaiah 13–14; 22; 24–30; 35
God asks prophets to warn people about what can happen when they choose to sin. In Isaiah’s time, he had to warn powerful kings and nations that they needed to change and follow God. This could be dangerous, but Isaiah was brave. He warned Israel, Judah, and other nations about the things that would happen if they did not turn back to God.
But Isaiah also shared a message of hope. He taught that even after difficult times, God would help His people come back to Him. God promised to bless them, heal them, and make their lives better.
Isaiah used a beautiful picture to describe this. He said that dry, empty land would become full of water, like a pool with springs.
Isaiah also prophesied about a “marvellous work and a wonder.” This meant that God would do something amazing to bless and restore His people.
Isaiah did not live long enough to see all of these promises come true. But we can see them happening today, and we can be part of God’s work.

Ideas for Learning at Home and Church

THE PRIDEFUL WILL FALL
Isaiah 13:1–11, 19–22; 14:1–20
Pride and worldliness will fail.
In Isaiah’s time, Babylon was a very powerful kingdom. Today, Babylon is gone. But Isaiah’s message still matters because Babylon can represent pride, greed, and sin. These things can still be around us today.
As you read Isaiah 13–14, think about these questions:
- How was the king of Babylon proud? How was his pride like Satan’s pride? What can we learn from his example?
- How can pride get in our way? What can we do to stay humble and follow God?
- Isaiah 14:3 says the Savior can give us “rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear.” How does Jesus Christ help us when we are sad, worried, or afraid?
Simple lesson: Pride and worldly things do not last. Jesus Christ can give us peace, help us overcome fear, and teach us to be humble.
TESTIMONY OF THE SAVIOR
Isaiah 22:22–23; 24:21–23; 25:6–8; 26:19; 28:16
Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah.
🌟 Jesus Christ Is the Promised Savior
Isaiah lived a long time before Jesus was born, but he taught people about Jesus Christ and what He would do for us.
The scriptures in Isaiah teach us that:
- ❤️ Jesus loves us and wants to help us.
- ✝️ Jesus would suffer and die for us so we can repent and be forgiven.
- 🌅 Jesus would be resurrected, which means He would live again after death.
- 👑 Jesus will come again someday.
- 🏠 We can build our lives on Jesus Christ because He is a strong and safe foundation.
Ask the children
You could ask:
“What did you learn from Isaiah that teaches you something about Jesus?”
Let each child share an answer if they would like.
You could also ask:
- “How do you know that Jesus loves you?”
- “How does Jesus help you when you make a mistake?”
- “What can you do to follow Jesus?”
- “What are you thankful Jesus has done for you?”
🧱 Simple object lesson
Show the children a rock or picture of a strong foundation.
Say:
“A strong house needs a strong foundation. Our lives also need a strong foundation. Jesus Christ can be our foundation. When we trust Him and follow His teachings, He can help us stay strong.”
❤️ Main message for the children
“Isaiah taught about Jesus Christ long before He was born. Jesus is our Savior. He loves us, died for us, was resurrected, and will come again. We can trust Him and follow Him.”
The goal isn’t for children to understand every difficult word in Isaiah. Help them leave the lesson knowing one simple truth: Jesus Christ loves them and is their Savior.
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Jesus Christ can save me from sin and death.
- Jesus helps us when we make wrong choices. He also helps us because He died and was resurrected. Isaiah taught about Jesus long before He came to earth.
- Read Isaiah 14:3, 25:8–9, and 28:16. Ask the children: “What do these verses teach us about Jesus?”
- Show pictures of Jesus in Gethsemane, on the cross, and after His Resurrection. Ask: “What is Jesus doing? How does this show that He loves us?”
- Read Isaiah 25:8. Explain that because of Jesus, death will not be the end. One day, He will make it possible for people to live again.
- Let the children draw a sad face with tears. Then erase the tears and draw a happy face. Explain that Jesus can help us feel peace and happiness, even when we are sad.
- Ask: “What are some wonderful things Jesus has done for us?”
TURN TO THE LORD
For Peace & Safety
Isaiah 24:1–12; 28:1–8; 29:7–13; 30:8–14
Turning away from the Lord brings spiritual danger.
Isaiah was warning God’s people: “Don’t turn away from the Lord. Stay close to Him!”
Sometimes people may say they believe in God, but they don’t listen to Him or follow His teachings. Isaiah taught that this can cause spiritual problems.
Here are some easy ways to understand his comparisons:
- 🌎 A sad, empty earth: When people turn away from God, life can feel empty and without peace.
- 🍷 Drunkenness: People can become confused and make poor choices when they don’t follow God.
- 🍞 Hunger and thirst: Our bodies need food and water, and our spirits need God. Without Him, our spirits can feel empty.
- 🧱 A broken wall: A wall protects a house. When it breaks, the house is not safe. In the same way, turning away from God can leave us spiritually unprotected.
❤️ Why should we stay close to the Lord?
Because God loves us and wants to help us. When we pray, read the scriptures, make good choices, and follow Jesus Christ, we can have peace, strength, guidance, and hope.
Simple lesson:
👉 Stay close to God. Listen to Him, follow Him, and remember that He is always there to help you.
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Jesus gives me “refuge from the storm.”
Isaiah 25:4–6 teaches us that Jesus can protect and help us.
Ask the children:
- Have you ever been inside a safe house during a big storm? 🌧️
- Have you ever sat in the shade when the sun was very hot? ☀️
- Have you ever been very hungry and then had a yummy meal? 🍎
These things make us feel safe, cool, and cared for.
Jesus can do the same for us. He can be like a safe shelter during a storm. When we are scared, sad, or having a hard time, we can pray to Him and ask for help.
Example:
“Imagine you are outside when a big storm starts. You run inside a house, and you feel safe. Jesus can be like that safe house. He helps us when life feels scary or difficult.”
Jesus loves us and wants to help us feel safe and cared for.
RESTORATION OF THE CHURCH
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
The Lord can restore (fix) what is lost or broken.
Have you ever lost something and thought you would never find it again? Or has something broken and you thought it could never be fixed?
Sometimes, when we make mistakes or turn away from God, Satan wants us to think we can never come back. But that is not true. Jesus Christ loves us and can help heal us and bring us back to Him.
Isaiah taught about the wonderful things the Lord can do. He can:
- Help people who are hurting.
- Forgive us when we repent.
- Give us hope when we feel sad or lost.
- Help us become stronger.
- Restore His gospel to the earth.
Isaiah 29 also teaches about the Restoration of the gospel. The gospel had been lost from the earth for a time, but Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ helped restore it through the Prophet Joseph Smith.
The Restoration included the Book of Mormon, prophets, priesthood authority, and other important parts of Jesus Christ’s gospel.
Isaiah called this a “marvellous work and a wonder.” These are good words because the Restoration is a wonderful blessing from God.
We can help with the Lord’s work by:
- Learning about Jesus Christ.
- Sharing the gospel with others.
- Being kind and loving.
- Helping people feel God’s love.
- Living the teachings of the gospel.
The most important message is this: When something in our lives feels broken or lost, we should not give up. Jesus Christ can heal us, help us, and lead us back to Him.
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
The Restoration of the gospel is a “marvellous work.”
- Read Isaiah 29:14 with your children. Talk about words that mean the same as “marvelous” and “wonder.” Help them find pictures or objects that show the wonderful things God has done. For example, you could use the Book of Mormon, a picture of a temple, or a picture of the First Vision. Let each child choose one and tell why it is special to them.
- Sing a song about the Restoration, such as “On a Golden Springtime.” Then talk about what the word restoration means. You could tell about something you lost and later found. Explain that the Restoration of the gospel is like getting something important back.
- Read Isaiah 29:13–15 together. Ask:
- Why did we need the gospel to be restored?
- What wonderful things has God done to restore His gospel?
- What part of the Restoration are you thankful for?
Help your children understand that the Restoration of the gospel is a wonderful blessing from God.

As you and your children read Isaiah 29:14, share with them other words that mean the same thing as “marvellous” and “wonder.” Let them help you find objects or pictures that represent some of the Lord’s marvelous works during the latter days. These might include a copy of the Book of Mormon, a picture of a temple, or a picture of the First Vision (there’s one at the beginning of this outline). Then your children could choose an item and share why it is marvelous to them.

A song about the Restoration of the gospel could go well with Isaiah 29, such as “On a Golden Springtime” (Children’s Songbook, 88). And perhaps a personal experience could help the children understand what restoration means. For example, you and your children could talk about something that you lost and how you found it. Help your children compare this to the Restoration of the gospel. According to Isaiah 29:13–15, why do we need the Restoration? What marvelous works is the Lord doing to restore His gospel? (see this week’s activity page).
