December 21–27: “We Have Waited for Him, and He Will Save Us”
Christmas
The Old Testament is filled with hope and anticipation. In some ways, it is like the Christmas season. From the time of Adam and Eve, the prophets, poets, patriarchs, and people of Israel looked forward to better days. They hoped for the Messiah to come and bring renewal and deliverance.
The Israelites often needed this hope. They experienced captivity in Egypt and Babylon, and they also struggled with their own sin and rebellion. Through it all, the prophets reminded them that a Messiah, a Deliverer, would come “to proclaim liberty to the captives” (Isaiah 61:1).
That hope began to be fulfilled when Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem. The mighty Deliverer of Israel was born in a stable and laid in a manger (see Luke 2:7).
But Jesus did not come only to deliver the Israelites of ancient times. He came to deliver you. He came to bear your grief, carry your sorrows, and be bruised for your iniquities, so that with His stripes you can be healed (see Isaiah 53:4–5).
That is why Christmas is still filled with joyful anticipation today. The Messiah came over 2,000 years ago, and He continues to come into our lives whenever we seek Him.

“JOY” BECAUSE OF JESUS
I rejoice in my Redeemer.
Christmas is a joyful season because Jesus Christ brings joy to the world. Long before the Savior was born, Old Testament prophets also felt joy as they taught about the coming Messiah.
Read the following scriptures and think about why these messages would have been important to people who were waiting for the Savior:
Psalm 35:9; Isaiah 25:8–9; 44:21–24; 51:11; Zephaniah 3:14–20; Moses 5:5–11.
Why are these passages precious to you? What reasons do these scriptures give us to be joyful?

REMEMBER JESUS
Symbols can help me remember Jesus Christ
Many Christmas traditions have symbolic meanings that point us to Him. The scriptures contain many symbols of the Savior:
-
Star: Numbers 24:17; Matthew 2:2; Revelation 22:16
-
Shepherd: Psalm 23; Luke 15:4–7; John 10:11
-
Lamb: Genesis 22:8; Exodus 12:5; 1 Peter 1:18–20
-
Water: Exodus 17:1–6; Jeremiah 2:13; Ezekiel 47:1–12; John 4:7–14
-
Rock: 1 Samuel 2:2; 2 Samuel 22:2–3; Psalm 118:22–23; Isaiah 28:16; Ephesians 2:20
-
Branch: Isaiah 11:1–2; Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15
-
Light: Psalm 27:1; Isaiah 9:2; 60:19; Micah 7:8; John 8:12
What other symbols, passages, and accounts testify of Jesus Christ?

IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Christmas decorations can help us talk about Jesus. A star, light, or gift can remind us of Him. Read these scriptures together and talk about how Jesus is like a lamb, star, shepherd, or light:
-
Genesis 22:8 — Jesus is like a lamb.
-
Numbers 24:17 — Jesus is like a star.
-
Psalms 23:1 — Jesus is like a shepherd.
-
Psalms 27:1 — Jesus is like a light.
You could hold up a Christmas decoration or picture as you read each scripture. You could also sing “Stars Were Gleaming” (Children’s Songbook, 37).
Read Isaiah 9:6 and look at a picture of baby Jesus. Ask the children to point to Jesus when they hear, “a child is born.” Explain that prophets in the Old Testament knew that Jesus would be born.
The Old Testament teaches us many things about Jesus. Think about the stories and scriptures you learned this year. What do you remember about the Savior? What did you learn about Him?

“WONDERFUL” Names of Jesus
“His name shall be called Wonderful.”
Jesus Christ has many names and titles that describe who He is and what He does. Read the scriptures listed (below*) and look for His titles. What other titles can you think of, especially from Christmas hymns?
Think about how each title helps you understand and remember the Savior. Choose one title or role of Jesus Christ to focus on throughout the coming year.
*SCRIPTURES WITH TITLES (names) OF JESUS:
Psalms 23:1; 83:18; Isaiah 7:14; 9:6; 12:2; 63:16; Amos 4:13; Zechariah 14:16; Moses 7:53

GIVING TRADITIONS
Christmas Traditions Can Help Us Think About Jesus
The people of Israel had special traditions, like the Passover, that helped them remember the Lord (see Exodus 12).
What Christmas traditions does your family have that help you remember Jesus? Are there any traditions from your family history?
You could also start a new tradition, such as:
-
Helping someone in need.
-
Giving a special “gift” to Jesus.
-
Watching the First Presidency’s Christmas devotional with a friend.
-
Writing a Christmas song.
-
Sharing the story of Jesus’s birth with others.

THE GIFT OF JESUS
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Heavenly Father gave me the gift of His Son to be my Savior.
How can you help your children feel the reverence and joy of Jesus Christ’s birth?
You could watch the video “The Christ Child” in Gospel Library together. You could also read these Scriptures:
-
Matthew 1:18–25
-
Matthew 2:1–12
-
Luke 1:26–38
-
Luke 2:1–20
After watching the video or reading the Scriptures, let each child choose a person from the story. Ask them to share how that person felt about Jesus.
Then, talk together about how you feel about Jesus and why His birth is special to you.
Talk with your children about gifts that have brought you joy. Then read Isaiah 25:9 together. Talk about why we are happy that Heavenly Father sent us a Savior.
Read Isaiah 25:8–9; 53:3–5; and Hosea 13:14. Ask: What do these scriptures teach us about how Jesus Christ saves us?
Sing a Christmas song like “Away in a Manger” or “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” Help your children find words in the song that show how much Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love them.
