December 14–20: “I Have Loved You, Saith the Lord”
Malachi
The Lord told His people, “I have loved you” (Malachi 1:2). But the Israelites had suffered for generations, so they asked, “Wherein hast thou loved us?” They may have wondered how their difficult history showed God’s love.
Even when people made mistakes and turned away from Him, God continued to love them and reach out to them.
-
When Joseph’s brothers mistreated him, God used Joseph to save his family from famine (see Genesis 45:4–8).
-
When the Israelites complained in the wilderness, God provided manna for them (see Exodus 16:1–4).
-
When Israel turned to other gods and was scattered, God promised to gather and redeem them if they repented (see Isaiah 54:7).
The Old Testament shows that God’s love is patient and everlasting. He never stopped loving His people, even when they turned away from Him.
This love continues today through Jesus Christ, whom Malachi called “the Sun of Righteousness.” He came “with healing in his wings” (Malachi 4:2). Jesus Christ is the greatest example of God’s love for ancient Israel and for all of us.
For more information about the book of Malachi, see “Malachi” in the Bible Dictionary.

RETURNING & RESPONDING
Malachi 1–4
“Return unto me, and I will return unto you.”
In Malachi’s time, the Israelites had rebuilt the temple, but they still needed to strengthen their relationship with the Lord. As you study Malachi, think about the questions the Lord asked the people and ask yourself similar questions to help you grow closer to Him.
-
How have I felt the Lord’s love for me? (Malachi 1:2)
-
Do my offerings truly honor the Lord? (Malachi 1:6–11)
-
How can I return to the Lord? (Malachi 3:7)
-
Am I robbing God in any way? (Malachi 3:8–11)
-
How do I respond to the Lord during difficult times? (Malachi 3:13–15; 2:17)

PURE OFFERINGS
Malachi 1:6–14
The Lord asks for “a pure offering.”
As you read Malachi 1, notice the sacrifices the priests offered. What do these sacrifices show about how they felt toward the Lord? (see Malachi 1:13).
Make a list of the offerings or sacrifices you give to the Lord. Think about what would make each offering “polluted” or “pure” (Malachi 1:7, 11).

TITHING BLESSINGS
Malachi 3:8–12
The Lord blesses me when I show my faith by paying tithing.
Imagine a friend asks why you pay tithing. Read Malachi 3:8–12 to find answers.
-
Why does the Lord want us to pay tithing?
-
What might make it hard to pay tithing, and how can we overcome those challenges?
-
How does paying tithing strengthen our faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ?
-
What blessings have you received from paying tithing?
-
What kind of person do we become when we pay tithing?
You can also read Elder Neil L. Andersen’s message, “Tithing: Opening the Windows of Heaven” (Liahona, Nov. 2023, 32–35), and Elder David A. Bednar’s message, “The Windows of Heaven” (Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2013, 17–18).
Read Malachi 3:10. What do you think “open you the windows of heaven” means? How does this phrase describe the blessings the Lord gives us when we pay tithing?
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
How can you teach your children about tithing?
Ask them to count 10 small objects, such as coins. Then have them set one object apart. Explain that tithing means giving one-tenth of what we receive to the Lord.
Read Malachi 3:8–12 together.
Ask your children:
-
What is tithing?
-
Why does Heavenly Father want us to pay tithing?
-
What blessings can we receive when we pay tithing?
You can also read “Malachi the Prophet” in Old Testament Stories, pages 171–172, or watch “First Things First!” in Gospel Library.
As you read Malachi 3:10 together, invite your children to stand by a window when you read the words “windows of heaven.” You could also pour water into a cup until it overflows to show what the words “there shall not be room enough to receive it” mean.
Tell your children about the blessings Heavenly Father has given you when you pay tithing. You can also read Elder Jorge T. Becerra’s experience in “Tithing—Putting God First” (Liahona, May 2026, 24–25).
Invite your children to draw pictures of these blessings and hang them on or near a window in your home.
TURN OUR HEARTS TO FAMILIES
Malachi 4:5–6
“I will send you Elijah the prophet.”
When Moroni quoted Malachi 4:5–6 to Joseph Smith, he changed some of the wording (see Joseph Smith—History 1:36–39). How do these changes help you better understand the prophecy?
Malachi 4:6 “And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.”
Think about these questions:
-
Who are “the fathers”? (See Deuteronomy 29:13.)
-
What promises were made to them? (See Abraham 2:9–11.)
-
How can you help fulfill these promises?
What experiences have helped you feel closer to your ancestors? Why is this important to Heavenly Father’s plan?
Read Doctrine and Covenants 110:13–16 and D. Todd Christofferson, “The Sealing Power” (Liahona, Nov. 2023, 19–22) to learn more about Elijah’s coming and how this prophecy is being fulfilled today.
Why are you grateful that Elijah has come?

IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Malachi 4:5–6
Elijah Helps Turn Our Hearts to Our Families
The Lord promised to send Elijah. Elijah would help families love each other and remember their ancestors (family members who lived long ago).
Read Malachi 4:5–6 together. Ask your children:
-
Who did the Lord promise to send?
-
When would this person come?
-
What would Elijah do?
-
Why was it important for Elijah to come?
-
Where was Malachi’s prophecy fulfilled? Read Doctrine and Covenants 110:13–16 to find the answer.
To learn more about how Elijah came, read “Joseph and Oliver Receive Priesthood Keys” in Doctrine and Covenants Stories, pages 26–30.
You can also sing “The Hearts of the Children” (Children’s Songbook, page 92) to help your children understand why Elijah came.
Help your children learn about their ancestors by using FamilySearch.org/discovery , the FamilySearch Tree app, or the My Family booklet.
Remember: We can turn our hearts to our families by loving them, learning about our ancestors, and remembering those who lived before us.

GOD LOVES ME
IDEAS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN
Malachi 1:2
The Lord Loves Me
Read Malachi 1:2 together. Ask your children, “How do we know the Lord loves us?”
Talk about the many ways the Lord shows His love for us. He gives us our families, friends, the beautiful world, and Jesus Christ.
Activity: Ask your children to draw pictures of things that remind them of the Lord’s love. Let each child share their picture and tell why it reminds them of His love.
