YOUTH LESSON ACTIVITY. “BUILD UPON MY ROCK” Sure Foundation rock & body puzzle. Youth will know why Jesus is their “rock” their sure foundation that they can lean on Him as He had proven His love, is our example, suffered for our sins, taught us how to be happy, and gave His life for us.

“Build upon My Rock” Rock & Body Puzzle
OBJECTIVE: (See above)
ACTIVITY: Create a rock and body puzzle to show youth ways they can obey the commandments, showing that the gospel of Jesus Christ is our rock. Read “Build upon my rock, which is my gospel” (D&C 11:24), and tell the youth that Jesus is the rock. He is our Redeemer, the Son of God. We must build a firm foundation by living the gospel of Jesus Christ, or we will not have the power to overcome the mighty winds and storms of the devil, who would “drag you down into the guilt of misery and endless woe.” (Read Helaman 5:12.)
TO MAKE Print and cut out the Rock Puzzle for each youth using the girl’s or guy’s head. Put puzzle pieces together. Glue-mount puzzle on an 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of colored paper, or store it in a plastic bag.
OPTION 1: An extra 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of plastic contrasting colored cardstock paper (if you glue-mount puzzle on paper).
OPTION 2: A zip-close plastic sandwich bag (if you are storing puzzle pieces in a bag).
THOUGHT TREAT Rock and body cookies. Make gingerbread cookie dough. Roll and cut out gingerbread boys and girls, and then roll the other half of the dough into 2″ rocks (dip cookie top in granulated or powdered sugar before baking) at 350 for 8-10 minutes. Decorate cookies.

Sing together “The Wise Man and the Foolish Man” (Children’s Songbook, 281)

Read 3 Nephi 14:24–27. Help the children substitute their names for “the wise man” as they sing. Why did the wise man’s house stay standing during the storm? Review verse 24 to emphasize that he both heard and did what the Savior said. -
Show the children a rock and some sand. Ask them to point to the rock when you describe a choice to follow the Savior and point to the sand when you describe a choice not to follow Him. Testify that when we do what the Savior says, we are strong like a house built on a rock.

“Rain” and “floods” come to all of us in life, but we can survive trials if we both hear and do what Jesus teaches.

As a class, read 3 Nephi 14:21–27 and 15:1, and ask the children to stand up every time you read the word “doeth.” Why does the Savior emphasize doing His sayings, not just hearing or remembering? Invite the children to draw a picture of verses 24–25 and write on the rock “Jesus” and something Jesus taught us to do. Sing together “The Wise Man and the Foolish Man” (Children’s Songbook, 281).

Invite the children to stand up, and ask them to imagine that one leg represents hearing the Savior’s words and the other represents doing them. Invite them to raise the “doing” leg and balance on the “hearing” leg. What would happen if a strong wind blew through the room? Use this example to illustrate why it is safer to do what the Savior says and not just hear His words.

When we are “rooted” in Jesus Christ, we are strengthened against worldly influences.

Paul’s testimony of the Savior found in Colossians 1:12–23; 2:2–8 provides a good opportunity for class members to ponder and strengthen their own faith. Class members could search these verses to find things that strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ. What does it mean to be “rooted and built up in [Jesus Christ]”? (Colossians 2:7). The picture of a tree in this week’s outline in Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families and the video “Spiritual Whirlwinds” (ChurchofJesusChrist.org) can help class members discuss this verse. What can strengthen or weaken the roots of a tree? How does being “rooted and built up in [Jesus Christ]” strengthen us against worldly influences? (see Colossians 2:7–8; see also Helaman 5:12; Ether 12:4).

You might invite class members to list things that Colossians 1:12–23; 2:2–8 teaches we can do to avoid the “vain deceit” that can “spoil” our faith in Christ (Colossians 2:8). How can we support each other in our efforts to follow the Savior and avoid Satan’s deceptions?
