. . . GOD’S ROAD SIGNS GUIDE US . . .

Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:21–37

Prophecies about the Savior’s Second Coming can help us face the future with faith.

  • Signs of the Savior’s Second Coming may be difficult for some class members to understand. It might help them to work in groups and identify signs they find in Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:21–37. It might also help them better understand the importance of these signs if they compare them to road signs. Why are road signs important? How are the signs of the Second Coming like road signs? How are they different? You might even give each group pieces of paper in the shape of road signs (See ROAD SIGN activity HERE or below) and invite them to write on each paper a sign that will precede the Second Coming. Let them share what they found, and invite the class to discuss evidence of these signs in the world today.

POST-AND-PRESENT ACTIVITY. SIGNS OF JESUS’ COMING before and after. Youth can look for the signs of Jesus before He comes again and after He comes (during the millennium). Where are we now and where will we be in the coming times? Place the signs around the world to mark BEFORE His coming and AFTER.  READ MORE

SCRIPTURE TO MEMORIZE. SECOND COMING warning 1 Thessalonians 5:2-6 scripture poster/card set. “For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; BUT LET US WATCH AND BE SOBER.”  READ MORE

1 Thessalonians 5:2-6 ⇒ SECOND COMING

Additional Lesson Helps on THE SECOND COMING:

1. The Lord has said, “Be not troubled, for, when all these things [the signs] shall come to pass, ye may know that the promises which have been made unto you shall be fulfilled” (D&C 45:35). He told us not to worry about the calamities but to look forward to the Second Coming of the Savior and be glad.
2. Some of the signs of Jesus’s Second Coming have happened. Others will be fulfilled in the future.

3. We look forward to Jesus’s Coming as a time of peace and joy.
4. But before He comes, the people of the earth will experience great trials and tragedies. Heavenly Father wants us to prepare for these troubles.
5. God has revealed these signs to His prophets. If we are faithful followers of Christ, we will know the signs of His coming and watch for them (see D&C 45:39). We will not be overtaken suddenly as by a “thief in the night,” (See SCRIPTURE POSTER above) but those who are in darkness will (Joseph Smith—History 1:37; Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:46–47).

. . . CONVERTING SELF TO PREPARE . . .

Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:26–27, 38–55Matthew 25:1–13

We must always be ready for the Savior’s Second Coming.

YOUTH LESSON ACTIVITY. BE PREPARED Second Coming GAME. Youth can make it to the Second Coming as they read wordstrips and fill their lamps to be prepared for when Jesus comes again. Reading the quote from the Prophet Spencer W. Kimball to provide oil for their lamps “DROP BY DROP IN RIGHTEOUS LIVING.” Then they can be ready like the five virgins in the parable: Ready for the bridegroom (Jesus).  READ MORE

. . . USING OUR TALENTS TO SERVE . . .

Matthew 25:14–46

At the Final Judgment, we will give the Lord an account of our lives.

  • The parable of the talents and the parable of the sheep and goats (SEE MATCHING ACTIVITY BELOW) can inspire us to think about the account of our lives we will give to the Lord at the Final Judgment. You might read the parables together and invite each class member to share one question the Savior might ask about our lives when we are judged. Provide time for class members to plan ways they will act on impressions they have received during the discussion.

  • To inspire a discussion about Matthew 25:34–40, you could invite class members to share examples of people who demonstrate the compassion described in these verses. Give them time to ponder who might need their service. What are some practical ways we can feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the sick?

YOUTH-CAN-TEACH ACTIVITY: Have youth share this with children – a great way to teach Matthew 25.

GAME ACTIVITY. CHOOSE TO FOLLOW Sheep or Goat? situation slap game. Youth can learn Jesus’ Parable of the Sheep and the Goats (Matthew 25:31-46) to help them make the right decisions. The sheep sit on the right hand of God by choosing the right, serving Heavenly Father, to one day live with Him again in the kingdom of God. The word-strip choices will help them slap left (goat) or right (sheep).  READ MORE

Parable of the Sheep and the Goats

YOUTH-CAN-TEACH ACTIVITY: Have youth share this with children – to increase their desire to pray about their choices.

YOUTH LESSON ACTIVITY. VALUE-PACK (book) of GOOD CHOICES. Youth can be inspired as they pray, asking the Holy Ghost to guide them in making right choices with this book to prompt them. TOPICS that may be found here: The language they use; keeping the Sabbath day holy; the clothes they wear; obeying their parents; their music choices; stealing; the movies, video, and television shows they watch; and telling the truth.  READ MORE
