LESSON ACTIVITY. ATONEMENT object lesson cards. Youth can learn about the Atonement where Jesus became our Savior. The objects and scriptures on the cards will lead them to know Jesus Christ. They can first read and then write their testimony on each card. Example: Matthew 26:14-16 object represents the thirty pieces of silver Judas received when he delivered Jesus to them.

ATONEMENT Object Lesson
OBJECTIVE: To help the youth understand that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, each of us may receive the gifts of immortality and eternal life.
ACTIVITY: an Atonement object lesson
Place real objects with Atonement object cards attached, or just the object cards themselves, in a basket or sack. Ask the youth to take turns drawing an object card and reading the scripture on the card. Have them tell the meaning of the scripture and how it relates to the object. Ask the youth to take their cards home, read the scripture, and write the meaning in the blank lines below.
Example: on the coins card—Matthew 26:14–16 they could write: “Jesus was betrayed for 30 pieces of silver.” Ask children to color one cloth red—“scarlet” (Matthew 27:28–30) and leave the other cloth white—“clean linen” (Matthew 27:58–59).
Gather together the following small objects and attach to each a piece of paper with the corresponding scripture references. Place the objects in a basket or sack, and let each child choose an object and read the scripture. Have the class decide how the object relates to the story of the Atonement.

THOUGHT TREAT Eternal Life “Egg”-stra Special Treat. Give each youth a boiled colored egg. Tell them that the egg represents a new beginning. Jesus Christ gave his life for us and gave everyone a new beginning, immortality (to be resurrected). Jesus also gave everyone a chance to earn an “egg”-stra special gift, the gift of eternal life. Those who are baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and go the “egg”-stra mile by living the commandments and receiving the temple ordinances can live with Heavenly Father and Jesus again in the celestial kingdom.
SCRIPTURE CHALLENGE CARD: Help children Search and Ponder this scripture card by filling in the blanks. PRINT this 5 x 7 scripture card from the pdf included with the above activity. You can punch the two holes on the left and tie a ribbon to attach cards or use two metal rings to connect cards.

Purpose
To help the children understand that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, each of us may receive the gifts of immortality and eternal life.
Preparation

Prayerfully study:

Moses 1:39—God’s plan is to make immortality and eternal life possible for each of us.
-
Isaiah 53:5–7—The Messiah will atone for our sins.

Matthew 26:36–46—Jesus Christ suffers in Gethsemane.

Study the lesson and decide how you want to teach the children the scripture accounts (see “Preparing Your Lessons,” p. vi, and “Teaching from the Scriptures,” p. vii). Select the discussion questions and enrichment activities that will best help the children achieve the purpose of the lesson.
-
Make a wordstrip that says:
Prepare a chart similar to the following:
-
Materials needed:
-
A Bible for each child.
-
A Pearl of Great Price and a Doctrine and Covenants.
-
Pictures 6-27, The Crucifixion (Gospel Art Picture Kit 230; 62505); 6-47, Jesus Praying in Gethsemane (Gospel Art Picture Kit 227; 62175); and 6-48, The Resurrected Jesus Christ (Gospel Art Picture Kit 239; 62187).
-
Suggested Lesson Development
Invite a child to give the opening prayer.
Enrichment Activities
You may use one or more of the following activities any time during the lesson or as a review, summary, or challenge.
-
Make wordstrips with key words or phrases from Old Testament prophecies, such as:
Display the wordstrips at the front of the class as you teach the scripture account of the Savior’s Atonement. Have the children listen for these words, phrases, or general ideas to see the fulfillment of these prophecies. Help the children understand the difficult phrases.
-
To use this activity, before class write the following questions on separate pieces of paper. During class give the questions to six different children.
-
What is death?
-
What is resurrection?
-
Who was the first person on earth to be resurrected?
-
What are the two greatest gifts Jesus Christ gave to us?
-
What gift is given to us from Jesus Christ without any effort on our part?
-
What gift from Jesus Christ do we have to work for?
Tell the children you are going to give an answer to a question. The child who has the right question is to read it aloud. Here are some possible answers to the questions you handed out:
-
When the spirit leaves the body. (What is death?)
-
When the body and spirit come together again, never to be separated. (What is resurrection?)
-
Jesus Christ. (Who was the first person on earth to be resurrected?)
-
Immortality and eternal life. (What are two gifts Jesus Christ gave to us?)
-
The gift of resurrection or immortality. (What gift is given to us without any effort on our part?)
-
The gift of eternal life. (What gift do we have to work for?)
-
-
Show a picture of someone you love who has died. Tell how you feel knowing that because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, if you live worthily you will see this loved one again. Let the children tell about someone who has died in their family whom they would like to see again. Explain that we do not need to fear death. Prophets have revealed that we will see our loved ones again, and we will feel great comfort and joy in the spirit world after death. Joseph Smith said: “I have a father, brothers, children, and friends who have gone to a world of spirits. They are only absent for a moment. They are in the spirit, and we shall soon meet again” (History of the Church, 6:316).
Brigham Young said: “We shall turn round and look upon it [the valley of death] and think, … I thirst no more, I want to sleep no more, I tire no more, … [I feel] nothing like pain or weariness, I am full of life, full of vigor, and I enjoy the presence of my Heavenly Father” (in Journal of Discourses, 17:142).
-
If you are teaching older children, prepare a matching game with the headings “Prophecies” and “Fulfillment of Prophecies.” Have the children read an assigned reference from the lettered list of fulfillment of prophecies and match it with the appropriate prophecy from the numbered list. Some examples you might use are:
Prophecies
Fulfillment of Prophecies
-
Isaiah 53:7—He opened not his mouth
-
Psalm 34:20—No broken bones
-
Zechariah 9:9—Came riding on an ass
-
Psalm 22:1—Why hast thou forsaken me?
-
Psalm 22:18—Cast lots for his garments
-
Zechariah 11:13—Thirty pieces of silver
Answers: 1-b, 2-e, 3-a, 4-f, 5-d, 6-c
-
-
Discuss the third article of faith and help the children memorize it.
The above activity Atonement object lesson illustrates the following
