Lesson 44 – Malachi Teaches about Tithes and Offerings

OBJECTIVE: To strengthen each child’s commitment to pay an honest tithe. Review enrichment activity 3 in the lesson manual for which the following activity illustrates.
ACTIVITY: Pending Spending Envelope:
In this envelope children can store their income until they can divide it into tithes and offerings, savings, and spending. This will help them avoid the temptation to spend tithing. Once it’s divided they can place their donations in the tithing and offerings envelope.

TO MAKE: Print and cut out the Pending Spending Envelope for each child. Option: Color and laminate envelope ahead of time and glue Velcro or use sticky-back Velcro to close envelope.
THOUGHT TREAT (when appropriate): Tithing Toast. Cut a piece of toast in half with crust removed to create bills. Cut round coin shapes with a bottle lid.
Place toast bill and 10 toast coins in a clear zip-close bag. To Make
Toast: Butter bread and sprinkle colored sugar (green for bills and yellow
for coins). To mix sugar, add food coloring to granulated sugar and mix in a
plastic zip-close bag. Broil buttered and sugared toast 2–3 minutes in the
oven. Tell children that they can become “toast” in the latter-days when the
earth is cleansed by fire if they do not pay their tithing. Read the following
scripture: D&C 64:23“He that is tithed shall not be burned at his
coming.” D&C 85:3 “He may tithe his people, to prepare them against the day of vengeance and burning.”
