The beginning of the book of Job teaches, in a story, that Satan tries to tempt people and make them doubt God. As you read what Satan said about Job (see Job 1:9–11; 2:4–5), think about this question: Why do I choose to follow Heavenly Father? We should love and obey God because we love Him, not just because we want blessings or rewards.

Read how Job reacted when hard things happened (see Job 1:20–22; 2:9–10). What do you like about the way Job stayed faithful?

Job’s friends thought God was punishing Job because of something he had done wrong (see Job 4–5; 8; 11). But that wasn’t true. Read Job 12–13. What did Job know about God that helped him keep trusting Him?

Think about what you know about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. How does knowing They love you help you be brave and faithful when life is hard?

Sometimes we learn the most important things when life is hard. Read about the hard things Job went through in Job 19:1–22. Then read what Job said about Jesus in Job 19:23–27.

Job knew that Jesus, his Redeemer, lives. How do you know that Jesus lives? How does believing in Him help you when you are sad, scared, or having a hard time?

Sing or listen to the song “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” (Hymns, no. 136). Listen for words that tell how you feel about Jesus. Talk together about why you love Him and why you are thankful He lives.

Job felt sad and upset because his friends blamed him for his troubles. He asked God why he had to suffer so much.

God did not tell Job exactly why these hard things happened. Instead, God showed Job how great and powerful He is. He asked Job questions about the earth, the sky, the sea, and the animals to help Job remember that God knows and understands everything.

Look at some of God’s beautiful creations, like mountains, stars, oceans, or animals. How do they help you remember how amazing God is? How can remembering God’s power help you when life is hard?

In the end, Job trusted God more. He learned that even when he didn’t understand everything, he could still have faith that God loved him and knew what was best.

How will you remind yourself of what you learned? 

"THINK CELESTIAL" Youth Can Teach

When Job was very sad, his friends told him that God was punishing him because they thought he had done something wrong (see Job 22:5). But they were not right.

If we were Job’s friends, what kind words could we say to help him? How can our words make someone feel better when they are sad? (See Job 16:5.) Look at the pictures and talk about these questions together.

Ask your children, “What makes someone a good friend?” Think of a friend who is kind, helpful, and caring.

Then look at a picture of Jesus Christ. Talk about how Jesus is the best friend. He loves us, helps us, and is always there for us.

Can you think of someone who is having a hard time? Talk about one kind thing you can do this week to be a friend like Jesus.
