Be True: Fishing for a Friend spin-and-tell
OBJECTIVE: The lesson helps youth understand how to be a true friend.
ACTIVITY: Fishing for a Friend spin-and-tell
After sharing the story of Jonathan, King Saul’s son, and David. Then enjoy this activity to help children learn the qualities of a “true blue” friend.
To Play: Sit in a circle and take turns spinning the fish. Do one of the following three things: (1) Tell something about yourself so others may know more about you. (2) Tell children something you know and like about someone in the circle. (3) Fish for a “true blue” friend note and read what a true friend does. (“True blue” friend notes should be placed facedown in the center to draw from).
TO MAKE Print and cut out and add a paper fastener to the center. Attach fish to circle center with a metal paper fastener or button brad. To make a button brad, sew two buttons together on opposite sides, (threading thread through the same hole) to attach fish to circle.
TREAT: Friendship Fish. Purchase fish-shaped crackers or gummy candy. As children eat, ask them to name qualities they would like in a friend. Tell the story about how Jonathan helped David (1 Samuel 23:16–17).
SCRIPTURE CARDS: Help children Search and Ponder this scripture card by filling in the blanks. PRINT this 5 x 7 scripture card from the pdf included with the above activity. You can punch the two holes on the left and tie a ribbon to attach cards or use two metal rings to connect cards.
