PRIMARY MUSIC SINGING TIME ACTIVITIES to Motivate Children to Sing
VEGGIE FAMILY SINGERS – Harvest a Garden pick-a-song with singing commands
11 pages (color/black-and-white visuals and instructions)
DESCRIPTION: Fun activity to help children choose the next song to sing! Hilarious singing hints, each with a play on words. Don’t forget about the worms, they will mix things up (with singing commands)!
Children can learn ways to sing better by choosing vegetables from the Veggie Family Singers garden. Each vegetable tells us how to become a great singer. For example, “Peter Pepper loves to sing fun songs with a peppy voice, but he never shouts.”
To Make:
1. Print, color, and cut out the Veggie Family Singers visuals that follow. You will need two copies of the garden plots to make four (shown right).
2. Laminate one or two posters to mount visuals on. Laminate visuals for durability.
3. Pick-a-Song: Write the song titles and page numbers for songs you wish children to learn on strips of paper and tape these to the back of veggies.
4. Mount the Veggie Family Singers sign and veggies on posters above garden plots (as shown); mounting worms on first (see #5).
5. Singing Commands: On the back of the seven worms, write a method to sing the songs (e.g.: Sing standing up, sing with arms folded, sing with eyes closed, sing turned around, only boys sing, only girls sing, sing without the music, sing slow, sing soft, hum. Tape worms into garden behind the veggies. When children pick vegetables, they will find a worm (to learn how the song should be sung).
To Use:
1. Explain the objective above to the children, pointing to the Veggie Family Singers sign.
2. Have children take turns coming up and doing the following:
• Choose a vegetable
• Read the singing hint on the veggie and talk about it and why it helps you to be a better singer, e.g., “Charlie Crookneck keeps his chin up while he sings so his voice can be heard.”
• Read the song title on the back, then move the vegetable to the side of the garden plot and sing the chosen song (according to the worm’s command).
