PRIMARY MUSIC SINGING TIME ACTIVITIES to Motivate Children to Sing
LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE! singing meter and pick-a-song

13 pages (color/black-and-white visuals and instructions)

DESCRIPTION: Help children to sing better by singing practice songs or any song with small, medium, and large flames to meter their efforts. Write songs on each candle and practice until their flames all burn bright!

To Make: Print, color, and cut out the images that follow. Laminate. Mount the Let Your Light So Shine! sign on a poster sideways as shown, and laminate the entire poster. The songs on the candles remind children to have faith in Jesus Christ who is our light and our perfect example. You can write practice songs that you want children to sing on the blank candles.

To Use:
1. Remind children that they can let their light so shine this year for the sacrament meeting presentation if they will brighten up their singing talents. If using the already-named song-titled candles: Say, “Let’s learn the songs that help us know that our Savior Jesus Christ loves us and that we want to follow Him.” Whatever the theme for the year’s songs, introduce them in this way.
2. On the poster, show children how you will place the low-light flicker on the candle to show their singing needs more work, the medium flicker to show they are doing better, and the bright light flicker if they are reaching their brightest singer voices.
3. Tell them that if they shout the song it blows out the light, and we don’t get any flicker at all.
4. Tell them that if they don’t sit up so they get the right air coming in, their voice will not carry and the light won’t get the candle burning.
Note: You can leave the songs and candle-flicker in place for the next singing time to remind the children of where they were on the song from the last practice.
