Special Piece of Family Puzzle (Family Roles Connection)
Help youth realize each family member has a divine role. Help them strengthen their family by learning the divine roles of parents and children and lending support.
ACTIVITY: Ask children/youth, “Do you want a loving family? Do you want a house that is fun to come home to? What can your family do to make home a heaven on earth?” Point to the sign posted under the face and say, “You are a special piece of your family puzzle.” Father, mother, and children have divine roles and duties in the family. Let’s learn what yours is, and what your parents’ are too. Then you can help and support each other in your divine roles and duties.
-
Have children/youth take turns helping you put the puzzle together to connect the family.
- After connecting the puzzle pieces, have children/youth come up and talk about each piece and why they think Heavenly Father wants us to live this role. For example, talk about why the father is the priesthood leader in the home. (The priesthood is given to worthy males so they can help others receive sacred ordinances. Priesthood power allows men to lead their families in righteousness.)
TO MAKE: Print, color, and cut out the connected family puzzle that follows on white card stock. Laminate. Post the sign and family faces (as shown), and place puzzle pieces in a container.
TESTIMONY SHARING: By divine design, Heavenly Father gave men and women different gifts and abilities to help them fulfill complementary roles as husband and wife. “Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. … Fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners” (“The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2010, 129).
THOUGHT TREAT: Painted Family Cookies. Using cookie dough cut out 3 people-shaped cookies using cookie cutters. Have youth paint their cookies with cookie paint (1 tablespoon can milk mixed with food coloring for each color). Paint family cookies hair, face, and clothes. Bake 350 for 8-10 minutes. Top with Clear Glaze: Mix 4 minutes: 1/4 cup can milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla/orange extract, 2 cups confectioners’ sugar.
