POST-AND-PRESENT Activity
Building a Strong Home (Home-“Tweet”-Home Building Project)
YOUTH can teach this lesson to children.
OBJECTIVE: Children/youth can learn how to build a strong home by showing love and respect for their family.
TO MAKE VISUALS: Print, color, and cut out the birdhouse and cards that follow. Assemble birdhouse. Sit birdhouse so the opening is within children’s reach. Place bird cards in a container to draw from. Have tape ready to tape cards to the board or wall. Provide a piece of straw or raffia string for each child (see #1 and #3).
ACTIVITY:
1. Show children/youth the birdhouse and give them a piece of raffia to hold.
2. Read Mosiah 2:17* and tell children, “‘Birds of a feather stick together.’ This means that families who love and respect each other work together and participate in wholesome activities that can make their homes sweet (‘tweet’) places to be. Let’s learn how we can build a strong home (or birdhouse).”
*Mosiah 2:17 “And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.”
3. Tell children/youth, “A strong family learns and lives the teachings of Jesus Christ so they can be happy.” Learn how you can help build a strong family by helping. Choose children/youth to draw a card and read it. Then, tell how they can help in this situation. Tape the card to the board next to the birdhouse.
4. Children/youth can all come up and place their straw or raffia into the opening of the birdhouse. If they want, they can say what they want to do to strengthen their family at this time.
TESTIMONY SHARING: Ask children/youth to share their testimony on the following: Ideas: How can I strengthen my family? “Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful … families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities” (“The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2010, 129). As we assist our parents in accomplishing these goals, we can help our families attain the happiness Heavenly Father wants for us.
THOUGHT TREAT: Home “Tweet” Home Birds Nest. Create an eatable bird’s nest pictures/recipes found on the Internet. See picture (shown right) and recipe on bakeat350.blogspot.com. Share ways we can love and encourage our family.
