POST-AND-PRESENT Activity
Butterflies Are Free–Repentance Garden
YOUTH can teach this lesson to children.
OBJECTIVE: Youth can compare themselves to a butterfly that wants to be free from the weight of sin (place butterfly visual under a rock) with this Butterflies Are Free—Repentance Garden activity.
By saying we are sorry and making amends, and by not repeating the mistake, we become free to spread our wings and be happy (place a butterfly visual on the flower). We can taste the sweet nectar of the gospel and follow Heavenly Father’s plan.
TO MAKE VISUALS: Print, color, and cut out the images. Mount the three-part chart on a poster. Place rocks and flowers in a container. To make a butterfly, cut a slit in the butterfly back where indicated and slide a paperclip inside. Glue butterfly back to back and fold wings up slightly. The butterfly can clip onto flowers and rocks.
ACTIVITY:
1. Talk about the atonement of Jesus Christ and why repentance is necessary. Jesus is our Savior; because He suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane we can REPENT and the heavy weight of sin can be lifted from us and we can be happy and climb to the top to live with God again.
2. Tell the youth, “Heavenly Father wants us to be free. In 2 Nephi 2:27 we learn how to be free like the butterfly without having the heavy burdens that sin places upon us.
Read 2 Nephi 2:27: “Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.”
3. Talk about the objective above and show the chart.
4. SET THE BUTTERFLIES FREE by doing the following. Have children take turns drawing a rock or flower and reading it aloud.
• ROCK. If choosing a rock, read the situation showing a wrong choice. Place the butterfly under the rock (showing the heavy weight of sin). Then, free the butterfly by telling how they can repent and place the butterfly on the last flower.
• FLOWER. If choosing a flower, read the situation showing the right choice and place your butterfly on that flower. Place flowers on the bottom of the vine first, working to the top.
If playing in teams, the first team to move their butterfly to the top flower wins!
THOUGHT TREAT: Butterfly Cookie. Cut out, bake, and frost butterfly-shaped cookies. Talk to children about the OBJECTIVE above and have them share how they have made progress and growth in areas of their life. Tell how they struggled and became strong with their trials.
