Counsel Together
Led by a member of the quorum or class presidency; 10–20 minutes
At the beginning of the meeting, repeat together the Young Women Theme or the Aaronic Priesthood Quorum Theme. Then lead a discussion about the work of salvation and exaltation using one or more of the questions below or questions of your own (see General Handbook, 10.2, 11.2, ChurchofJesusChrist.org). Plan ways to act on what you discuss.

At the end of the lesson, as appropriate, do the following:
-
Testify of the principles taught.
-
Remind class or quorum members about the plans and invitations made during the meeting.
-
Live the gospel. How can turning to the Lord help us deal with challenges and trials?
-
Care for those in need. Who do we know who needs our prayers and our friendship?
-
Invite all to receive the gospel. What plans to share the gospel have been discussed in ward youth council meetings? How can our class or quorum get involved?
-
Unite families for eternity. How can doing family history work strengthen our relationships with Heavenly Father and Jesus?
YOUTH ACTIVITY: COUNSEL WITH THE LORD tent card. Youth can list how to pray and what to pray for, checking the daily prayer boxes (placing this on their nightstand).
YOUTH ACTIVITY: BE TRUE: FISHING FOR A FRIEND spin-and-tell. Youth learn ways to be a true friend, e.g., tell about yourself, etc.
YOUTH ACTIVITY: MISSIONARY PREPARATION mirror motivators. Youth will know to build their testimony, have a skill, and GLOW! Prepare to share the gospel.
POSTER ACTIVITY: TURN THE HEARTS OF THE CHILDREN OF TO THE FATHERS concentration game. Youth can be inspired to do temple work as they match temple workers with those on the other side waiting to have their work done.

Teach the Doctrine
Led by an adult leader or youth; 25–35 minutes
Prepare Yourself Spiritually
When we feel guilty after sin, we have a choice. These feelings, while painful, can be a blessing if they move us to repentance. But Satan tells us these feelings mean that God does not love us and tries to make us feel discouraged and hopeless. There may be people you teach who are burdened with such feelings. They may wonder if they can ever be clean and happy again. How might you help them find hope in the Savior’s Atonement?
The prophet Isaiah boldly chastised people for their sins. But he also testified that because of the Savior, “though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18). Ponder this as you read Isaiah 1–12 this week. What might inspire those you teach to turn to Jesus Christ with faith that the burdens of their sins can be taken away? You might also study Sister Sharon Eubank’s testimony of Christ in her message “Christ: The Light That Shines in Darkness” SEE VIDEO BELOW (Ensign or Liahona, May 2019, 73–76).
POSTER ACTIVITY: PERFECT BRIGHTNESS OF HOPE will help youth know that Jesus saved us from physical and spiritual death with this mood-changer (from sad to happy).
YOUTH ACTIVITY. “I STAND ALL AMAZED at the love Jesus offers me” sacrament thought card. Youth can memorize 3 Nephi 11:14 and write their feelings about the Savior.
YOUTH ACTIVITY. JESUS IS THE LAMB OF GOD little lamb block. Youth can read John 1:29 to learn that Jesus Christ is the lamb to take away “the sins of the world.” Several blocks can be made to push around pretending to herd sheep (and more).
YOUTH ACTIVITY. MY CHANGE OF HEART STEPS 2-sided mobile. Youth can learn from King Benjamin’s counsel (Mosiah 5:2, 5). Steps 1-4 (1) Learn of Christ and the commandments (2) Have faith in His Atonement, (3) Seek forgiveness with His mercy, and (4) Make covenants.
MUTUAL NIGHT OR FAMILY NIGHT ACTIVITIES:
TUG AT THE HEARTSTRINGS: Have an evening of poetry reading at someone’s house and feel your heartstrings being tugged. Use soft lights and music to set a relaxed mood. Also, read selected scriptures that show heartfelt emotion. Encourage youth to really think about this and come prepared with their favorite poetry, hymns, or scriptures to read, especially those relating to Jesus and His love for us that bring hope and peace.
“CHANGE OF HEART” ROLE-PLAY: Have youth team up and visit the ward library to find an article that expresses a change of heart. Have them rehearse and then act out the story in a five-minute play for the other youth. Act while one person reads parts of the story.

QUOTE*: President Gordon B. Hinckley placed where I see it every day. He said: “You don’t … build out of pessimism or cynicism. You look with optimism, work with faith, and things happen.” *TALK Turn On Your Light
Learn Together
To prepare for a discussion that builds on Isaiah 1–12, you could ask each youth to bring to the meeting something red and something white. You could display these objects while reading together Isaiah 1:16–18. Then the youth could share in their own words what they learn from these verses. (See Sister Sharon Eubank’s discussion of verse 18 in “Christ: The Light That Shines in Darkness.”) SEE VIDEO ABOVE. Here are some other activities that can inspire faith in the Savior’s power to make us spiritually clean.
SEE (below*) SPIRITUAL EXAMPLES OF REPENTANCE
-
Feeling sorry that we have sinned is helpful and leads us toward repentance. Feeling discouraged or worthless because of our sins is not helpful and can keep us from repenting. Your class or quorum could read together the section titled “Godly Sorrow” in President Dieter F. Uchtdorf’s message “You Can Do It Now!” SEE VIDEO BELOW (Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2013, 55–57). What is the difference between sorrow for sin that leads to repentance and sorrow that leads to despair? (see also 2 Corinthians 7:9–10; Mormon 2:12–14). If someone feels overcome by feelings of guilt and despair for sin, what might we say to help him or her turn to the Savior? Invite the youth to share their testimonies of the Savior and His mercy.
POSTER ACTIVITY: GUESS WHO WAS SAVED BY THE SAVIOR? Youth will learn the Book of Mormon stories of Enos, Alma the Younger, King Lamoni’s father … to know we can be saved like them.
YOUTH ACTIVITY: SUNSHINE REPENTANCE doorknob reminder. Youth can learn from Mosiah 27:29 that they can move from darkness into light and feel the warmth and peace that true repentance brings. Then write the eight steps to repentance on the back.
POSTER ACTIVITY: ERASER PROMISES steps to repentance pencil & bookmark. Youth ideas to repent and erase the wrong, receive forgiveness, and make the right choices.
YOUTH ACTIVITY. RIGHTEOUS RADIO slide-guide tool. Youth can TUNE-IN to the Lord’s will each day as they: Pray; Study scriptures, Receive the Holy Ghost as they live commandments, and Receive priesthood blessings and a Patriarchal Blessing.
MUTUAL NIGHT, SEMINARY, OR FAMILY NIGHT ACTIVITIES
MEDIA MANIA: Have an evening where a member of the bishopric or presidency of the Young Women &/or Young Men present and discuss media (e.g., radio, television, satellite dish, cable, videos, Internet, and what to look for—the good and what to avoid).
Ideas for Media Mania Discussion:
1. Good: Talk about the good things good media brings to our lives (e.g. values, beautiful music, genealogy research).
2. Bad: Then talk about self-control and mixed signals, Satan’s design for the use of media. Parents can come.
3. Research: There are many articles available (e.g., “Reel Life vs. Real Life,” by Joseph Walker, in the Ensign, June 1993, pages 15-19).
TUNE-IN VALUE-ABLE LIST: Youth can record and make a list of uplifting films, television programs, computer programs, Internet sites, and songs that express the For the Strength of Youth values.
YOU CAN DO IT NOW – To rise up, we need this “infusion of confidence, enthusiasm, and strength”
Quote from the “You Can Do It Now!” Talk (HERE shown left)
Let us rise up and become men of God. We have a champion, a Savior, who walked through the valley of the shadow of death on our behalf. He gave Himself as a ransom for our sins. No one has ever had greater love than this—Jesus Christ, the Lamb without blemish, willingly laid Himself on the altar of sacrifice and paid the price for our sins to “the uttermost farthing.”7 He took upon Himself our suffering. He took our burdens, our guilt upon His shoulders. My dear friends, when we decide to come to Him, when we take upon ourselves His name and boldly walk in the path of discipleship, then through the Atonement we are promised not only happiness and “peace in this world” but also “eternal life in the world to come.”8
When we make mistakes, when we sin and fall, let us think of what it means to truly repent. It means turning our heart and will to God and giving up sin. True heartfelt repentance brings with it the heavenly assurance that “we can do it now.”
-
*Reviewing scriptural examples of repentance can help those you teach build their faith that Jesus Christ can make them spiritually clean. You might write on the board names such as Saul (later Paul), Alma the Younger, Zeezrom, and the Anti-Nephi-Lehies. You could also write two groups of scripture references: Acts 8:3; Mosiah 27:8–10; Alma 11:21–23; Alma 17:12–15 (these people in their sinful state) and Acts 9:13–20; Alma 36:17–24; Alma 15:5–12; Alma 23:6–12 (after these people turned to the Savior and repented). The youth could match each name with the scriptures describing that person. What did these people do to repent? What do these accounts teach about the Savior’s willingness to forgive? Do we see some patterns we can follow?
DOWNLOAD Guess Who Was Saved By the Savior forgiveness stories (HERE or below) -
To help those you teach better understand forgiveness of sin, you could give each person an analogy or parable to study. These could include:
– The prodigal son (see Luke 15:11–24);
– The Savior as our Shepherd (paragraphs 5–8 of Elder Dale G. Renlund’s message “Our Good Shepherd” SEE VIDEO BELOW [Ensign or Liahona, May 2017, 29–32]); and
– A broken piano (the beginning of Sister Cristina B. Franco’s message “The Healing Power of Jesus Christ” SEE VIDEO BELOW [Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2020, 60–62]). The youth could summarize each analogy or parable and discuss what it teaches about the Savior’s love and atoning power.
Doctrine and Covenants 49:26
“Behold, I say unto you, go forth as I have commanded you; repent of all your sins; ask and ye shall receive; knock and it shall be opened unto you.
Behold, I will go before you and be your rearward; and I will be in your midst, and you shall not be confounded.
Behold, I am Jesus Christ, and I come quickly. Even so. Amen.”
Act in Faith
Encourage class or quorum members to ponder and record what they will do to act on the impressions they received today. If they would like, they could share their ideas. Invite them to think about how acting on their impressions will strengthen their relationships with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
