TO PURCHASE ACTIVITY: Copy or print the pattern from the Young Women Fun-tastic! Manual 1 book or CD-ROM.
ACTIVITY: Heavenly Homemaker Coupon Book
Encourage young women to express their thanks to their mother or father by helping at home. They can give their parents this coupon book that their parents can fill in each coupon with household chores they want them to do to make home a heavenly place.
To make coupon book, color and cut out pages and place the “Heavenly Homemaker” page on top. Staple booklet together with two staples (as shown).
THOUGHT TREAT: Sweet Home Gingerbread Cookies. Cut out large gingerbread house cookies. Paint windows and a door using a paintbrush and colored milk (1/4 teaspoon food coloring to 2 tablespoons canned milk). Bake until golden brown. Talk about how home can be a sweet place to be if it is taken care of.
HOMESPUN DEMO: Have individuals who iron, cook, vacuum, dust, sew, or wash windows well demonstrate their skills in rotating classes. They might iron a shirt, make a simple soup, boil eggs, tell how to clean with a toothbrush, use Clorox without bleaching clothes in the process, take stains out of laundry, sew a zipper or collar, make button holes, sew on a button, etc. Give prizes for participants, e.g., a duster, a sponge, a can of ironing spray starch, a wire whisk.
HOMEMAKING TALENT NIGHT: Have moms and young women display and tell about their talents, e.g., an ironed shirt, a cooked or baked item, a picture of a decorated room, a window washing demonstration, a sewn item, a gardening demo. Invite moms and have fun sharing talents. Share homemade bread and jam.
HOME SWEET HOME IDEAS: Have young women bring several ideas that have made their home a pleasant place to live. Have them tell when they feel most comfortable at home, how they feel when the house is in order and clean, what they do when a guest is coming, or how they feel when the guest arrives. Talk about home neglect: sweeping the dirt under the rug; piling junk in cupboards, closets, and drawers; leaving clutter, or dirty dishes out. Discuss strategies for keeping the home in order and what they can do to share their support and love.
Before You Start: Prepare a bag with dirty laundry, smelly socks, and sweaty gym clothes. Have young women close their eyes while they smell the contents. Then have them close their eyes and smell a bag of clean clothes (dried on the clothesline or with air freshener sprayed inside). Talk about the odors that come from a dirty house and the clean smell that comes from a clean house. Share some “home sweet home” ideas.
