Little LESSON LIFESAVER Activity
I can help at church! poster or coloring page
OBJECTIVE: Help children understand that every member of the ward or branch can help at church.
POSTER ACTIVITY – I can help at church!
1. Print or copy the activity poster to color.
2. Talk about the poster, saying, “I can help at church!”
• “I can walk reverently in church.” Demonstrate the right way to walk through the meetinghouse.
• “I can pick up trash from around my chair.” Talk about how the church is Heavenly Father’s house. If we leave a mess or don’t pick up messes others leave, we are not showing love and respect for Heavenly Father and Jesus.
• “I can thank my teacher for such wonderful lessons.” Have a child help you give part of the lesson, then thank him or her for helping tell others about the gospel. Ask the children to thank the child for helping you.
• ”I can say the prayer when asked.” Ask children to volunteer to say the prayer, telling them that you will help them. Ask, “When we pray, whom do we pray to?” “What do we say?” Review the lesson 4 handout.
3. Talk about the Home Activity: “Help me realize we can all help at church. I can be helpful, reverent, and remember to say thank you to those who have helped me.”
THOUGHT TREAT: Fishers-of-men crackers. Place a picture of a fish on three or four pictures of Jesus. Give children goldfish crackers to munch on as you have each child come up and choose a picture with a fish attached. Tell the story. Tell children that Jesus asked His disciples to be fishers of men, to bring in and teach those who want to hear the gospel. Talk about how we can be fishers of men by helping at church. Name ways (e.g., being reverent so others can hear the stories of Jesus).
SING “When We’re Helping” and “Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam” (Children’s Songbook, 198, 60).
LESSON IDEAS:
• 4 Ways to SHINE! Even though you’re a child, you never know when you will be a shining example of the gospel to all who know you. WAYS: (1) Listen to your parents and your Primary teacher. (2) Have faith. (3) Read the scriptures. (4) Pray always. – Source: Be a Shining Example, Elder Bruce D. Porter of the Seventy
• Elder Robert C. Oaks, a Church leader said, “It is easier to treat people kindly if we always look for the good in them. One of my favorite scriptures says, “Let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God” (D&C 121:45). Virtue is everything good, so this scripture means that we should always think about the good things in people and in situations. When you think about the good things that are in other people, instead of thinking about what they lack, you will find it easier to love them.
We should treat all of our friends kindly, but especially the members of our own families. Two of our sons are 18 months apart, and they have always been best friends. They did almost everything together when they were growing up. In every photograph we have of them, one has his arm around the other. Heavenly Father has given us mothers and fathers to teach us and brothers and sisters to learn from, but most of all to love. Our families are our greatest treasures. We should treat them in a special way because they are going to be our eternal friends.”
