ACTIVITY DAYS PLANNER
Color My Life with Knowledge (learn to research about color and colorful subjects).
1. Obtain a set of red, yellow, green, and blue cards. Write a question about each color on the form (something you have wondered about relating to that color). Example: “What does it mean when you find a four-leaf clover?”
2. Do research about your color and subject, then write your findings on the color form, e.g. (on the green form), “Some people believe that when you find a four-leaf clover, you will have good luck.”
3. Share what you have learned.
4. Print a copy of the Color My Life with Knowledge handout and the pattern to make Rose-Colored Glasses. Make the glasses and present or participate in Activity #1 (Demonstration) and #2 (Reading Time Using Rose Glasses).
SEE BELOW for more activities to COLOR YOUR LIFE WIHT KNOWLEDGE (Activities 1 and 2).
THOUGHT TREAT (Treats of a Different Color). Get together in two groups (one acting as the server and one as the audience, then rotate presentation). To Prepare: Gather a large selection of foods of different colors and cover them up. (Ahead of time, ask the girls who will be in the audience what their favorite color is.) To Present: Ask the girls in the audience to name their favorite color, then pull out a sample of food in their favorite color and let them eat that food. Ask them to describe their impression and knowledge of the food.
COLOR MY LIFE WITH KNOWLEDGE, ACTIVITIES 1-2
Activity 1: Color My Life with Knowledge Demonstration
Ahead of Time: Fill five clear glasses 3/4 full with water, placing a drop of food coloring in four of the five glasses, leaving one glass of water uncolored. Use red, yellow, green, and blue food coloring. Five different people can do the demonstration, with each person doing one of the five steps below. This demonstration can be presented to parents.
Colored Water Demonstration:
1. Show glass with uncolored water (hiding the four glasses with colored water). Say, “‘Some people drink freely from the fountain of knowledge, while others only gargle. Let’s learn how we can drink freely from the fountain of knowledge.”
2. Show glass with green water. Say, “Caroline and her brother found a pond filled with green frogs hopping merrily, jumping, and sinking into the mud and water. She was so excited that she went to her encyclopedia and learned that boy frogs call out ‘jug-or-rum’ and girl frogs don’t speak out, and in this way she colored her life with knowledge.”
3. Show glass with blue water. Say, “One day Alexa went to the ocean and saw the deep-blue water. She took some of the ocean water inside to see if it was really blue, and it wasn’t. She later read that pure water is transparent and colorless. Large bodies of water appear blue because they reflect the color of the sky. Alexa also learned a song called ‘Land of the Sky-Blue Water,’ and in this way she colored her life with knowledge.”
4. Show glass with yellow water. Say, “One day Kim saw a large sunflower growing over her backyard fence. She found some garden books and learned how to grow giant sunflowers, coloring her life with knowledge.”
5. Say, “As we drink from the fountain of knowledge, we color our lives each day.”
Activity 2: Rose-Colored Glasses Reading Time
Ahead of Time: Copy the Rose-Colored Glasses on rose-colored cardstock. Purchase red cellophane (available at craft stores) to insert in glasses for lenses. Find a few favorite poems to read.
Rose-Colored Glasses Reading Time: Cut out the Rose-Colored Glasses frames and tape a 2″-by-6″ piece of red cellophane behind frames to create lenses. Talk about the idea of looking at life through rose-colored glasses—looking on the bright side, anticipating the best from life. Attitude is everything. Read poetry with glasses on and see if it doesn’t look a little rosier behind the rose-tinted lenses.
