BIG BITE FISH memorize-a-song, pick-a-song, singing meter or goal motivator
12 pages (color/black-and-white visuals, intro)
DESCRIPTION: This Big Bite Fish activity will help children/youth memorize/achieve a bite at a time! It can also be used as a song/goal meter as fish are all eaten up by the time the song ends or goal is achieved (in a certain amount of time) if the singing is great fun and engaging! Or, if the goal is achieved to satisfaction.
Use this Big Bite Fish activity to help children/youth gauge how well they are singing or achieving a goal one bite at a time. How? Fish-by-fish they will see how well they are memorizing a song or singing it, or they can use the fish to help them choose a song (or achieve the goal).
To Make:
1. Print, color, cut out, and laminate (optional) the six fish and the water strip.
2. Construct the water strip first by matching up ends A to A, B to B, and so on. Do not overlap the ends but simply put them end to end and tape them in place. When the entire water strip is put together, begin fan folding where indicated. Fanfold in both directions so the water strip will bend easily in the right places.
3. Using a hole punch, punch where holes are indicated just past the little fish.
4. Complete the fish by attaching a paper clip to each fish as shown. Unbend the paperclip in the center and place the larger end sticking up from the mouth of the fish and tape in place using box tape over the entire paperclip below the mouth for stability.
5. Next, tape each fish where indicated onto the water strip by securing it with tape on the back. Be careful not to tape fish beyond the folded area by the mouth so the strip will move properly.
6. On the green (largest) fish, tie a transparent ribbon (organza), string, or fishing line to the paperclip and then thread through each subsequent fish and through the hole above the little red fish. When the string or line is completely threaded through and the fish are lying down flat, tie off the portion of the string on the back side of the water strip and secure it to a large paperclip or 1” dowel so the string will not pull through the hole.
To Use: Children/youth will love a chance trying to get the fish all eaten up. To work the fish, hold the tab above the red fish and pull on the string, and the fish will start fan-folding over each other beginning with the red fish that is eaten by the green fish, then the green fish that is eaten by the pink fish, etc.—until all the fish are stacked and eaten by each other.
• MEMORIZE A SONG. Begin by telling children/youth that singing (or goal achieving) can be fun—even hard songs to learn if we take them a bite at a time just like this big fish that does so well that it eats the fish next to it. Let’s see how well you can memorize a song (or achieve a goal). With each verse memorized you can help the fish eat the next fish.
• CHOOSE A SONG. You can help us by reading the song page number on the back of the fish just before it is swallowed up. Then find the number in the Children’s Songbook or Hymns book.
• SINGING METER. Each time the leader can see the children are singing well, she can pull the fish into each other, one swallows the other up. If your song was really good, the whole school of fish will be eaten up by the time the song is sung.
