PRIMARY MUSIC SINGING TIME ACTIVITIES to Motivate Children to Sing
FLYING-HIGH KITE singing meter and pick-a-song
7 pages (color/black-and-white visuals and instructions)
DESCRIPTION: This activity will motivate children to sing as the kite reads, “Sing with all your might!” As they see the kite go UP when they sing well, and DOWN when they are not singing well.
To Make:
1. Print, color, and cut out the kite piece.
2. Laminate kite for durability.
3. To make tail, punch a hole in the bottom of the kite, where indicated, and thread a strip of cotton fabric through hole (1 1/2″ x 24″ strip).
4. To thread kite, secure a 20-foot piece of sturdy string or fishing line to the back of the kite with packaging tape or duct tape. Then thread string through a 3-foot piece of PVC pipe and tie string ends together to make a loop.
5. Write practice songs on kite bows and attach to kite’s tale.
To Use:
• Singing Meter: Use the kite as a singing meter to determine how well children are singing. Do this when children practice songs for the Primary program, or for favorite songs you think need improvement.
• Pick-a-Song: Children can come up and choose a practice song (written on the bows attached to the kite’s tale).
• Hold Kite and Judge the Song: Have an older child, teacher, or special guest be the judge to determine how well the children are singing. Have this person hold up the kite by holding onto the pipe with one hand and tugging or releasing the string with the other hand. Pull the kite up or down to indicate how well children are singing. To start, hold the pipe high in the air and position the kite low on the string. As they begin singing, pull down on the string just under the PVC pipe to raise the kite if they sing well, and pull down on the opposite string to drop the kite if they sing poorly. If they sing excellently, make the kite soar to the top!
