SCRIPTURE POSTER / CARDS
Matthew 5:16 – Let Your Light Shine
8 pages (color/black-and-white visuals: 3 sizes for poster)
Objective: Help children/youth memorize Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
To Make: Print, color, and cut out poster of your choice. If printing the larger size poster, mount the two parts on poster paper. The smaller cards are for children to take home.
Ways to Motivate Children/Youth to Memorize Scripture:
• Give out small black and white scripture cards to memorize.
• Once they are passed off give out the colored version of scripture cards.
LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE CEREMONY. Have youth pick from a bowl full of birthday candles one – five they wish to light in after expressing how someone has lit up their lives through service or ways you wish to serve or would like to be served. A whole cake could be placed in the center of a table youth could walk around as they light their candles and tell how you can let your light shine. Talk about the scripture in Matthew 5:16 (above) and give each a card to take home. Youth can repeat the scripture. Then all at once blow out the candles.
LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE CAKE. Youth can remove the (above) candles enjoy the cake with ice cream.
COME FOLLOW ME Lesson 38 Ideas:
I can be a good example for others.
Sometimes children might not realize how much their examples can bless others. Use these verses to encourage them to let their light shine.
Possible Activities
-
Tell the children that 3 Nephi 12:14–16 is about them, and then read it aloud. Whenever you read “you” or “your,” point to the children, and ask them to point to themselves.
-
Show the children a flashlight, and invite one of them to turn it on. Explain that when we follow the Savior, it’s like turning on a light that can help others follow Him too. Then cover or hide the light, and ask the children to name some things they can do to be a good example to others. Each time they do, let them uncover the light (see also this week’s activity page).
-
Sing together a song that encourages the children to shine like a light, such as “Shine On” or “I Am like a Star” (Children’s Songbook, 144, 163).
DOWNLOAD “I Am like a Star” song visuals (HERE). COMING SOON
Tell the children about the light you see in them when they do “good works,” and explain how their light and examples help others and inspire you to do good works too.
