. . . JESUS’S BIRTH FORETOLD . . .
Jesus was born.
Jesus left His home with Heavenly Father to be born on earth so He could be our Savior. How can you help the children remember the story of Christ’s birth?
-
As you read the story of Christ’s birth, invite the children to act out the story themselves, or use this week’s activity page to review the story. (See also “Chapter 5: Jesus Christ Is Born,” in New Testament Stories, 13–15, or the corresponding video on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.)
-
If you have one, bring a Nativity set, and invite the children to set the pieces in appropriate places as you tell them the story of Jesus Christ’s birth. You could also show a picture of the Nativity (see, for example, this week’s outline in Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families). Point to different people in the Nativity, and invite the children to share what they know about each person.
-
Sing together the children’s favorite songs about Jesus’s birth. As you do, look for opportunities to bear your testimony of the Savior. Invite the children to share why they love Jesus.
Ancient prophets foretold the Savior’s birth.
Prophets and believers had been looking forward to the Savior’s birth for centuries. Understanding this truth can help the children gain a deeper appreciation for the Savior’s life and mission.
-
Ask the children to talk about things they look forward to, such as a birthday or holiday. Have the children read Helaman 14:2–5 to find something prophets were looking forward to.
-
Read together some prophecies of the Savior’s birth (see Isaiah 7:14; 9:6; 1 Nephi 11:18; Helaman 14:5). Help the children list details these prophecies contain and find their fulfillment in Luke 2:1–21 and Matthew 2:1–12.
-
Invite the children to draw a picture of something from Matthew 2:1–12 or Luke 2:1–21 and share why they are grateful Jesus was born.
-
ACTIVITIES FOR:
Jesus was born.
Ancient prophets foretold the Savior’s birth.
POST-AND-PRESENT ACTIVITY. JESUS’S BIRTH FORETOLD – Christmas Concentration. Prophets told of Jesus coming to be our Savior hundreds of years before He came. Mary and Joseph, shepherds and wise men were told to follow the bright star. Youth can place the star over the manger and match the stars (with the messages given) to tell their story of the Son of God born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). READ MORE
AGES 1-5 I’M THANKFUL FOR JESUS’S BIRTH poster or coloring page. Children feel love for babies and especially this baby cuddled in a blanket lying in a manger bed. The HOME ACTIVITY helps them discuss with family that special night when Jesus was born and the gifts given Him. READ MORE
AGES 4-7. BIRTH OF JESUS Shepherd and Angel turn-around headband stories. To feel the joy of Jesus’ birth, children can wear the headband and roleplay the SHEPHERD and ANGEL roles. With the SHEEP side of the headband forward say, “I am a shepherd. I found the baby Jesus.” Then, with the STAR side of the headband forward, say, “I am an angel. I told the shepherds where to find the baby, Jesus.” READ MORE
AGES 8-11. PROPHETS TELL OF JESUS poster presentation. Youth can share with family and friends the testimonies of four Prophets who told of Jesus Christ’s coming. Examples: Samuel the Lamanite stood on a tower and told that Jesus was to be born within five years. Abinadi told that Jesus would come 150 years before and would break the bands of death and take upon the sins of the world. READ MORE
YOUTH GOAL ACTIVITY. GIFTS OF SERVICE planner. Youth are instructed to not get “wrapped up in themselves,” to give service to FAMILY, FRIENDS, and individuals at CHURCH. Youth leaders can use this to plan in bishopric meetings. Youth can use it to brainstorm ideas, use it as a checklist, and a list of youth goals to aid the ward/branch and community needs. READ MORE
SINGING TIME. “SAMUEL TELLS OF THE BABY JESUS” song visuals. Youth can sing along to tell of The Book of Mormon Prophet Samuel the Lamanite stands on the wall to tell that Jesus would soon be born. Write the words on the cue cards (in your language) to place on the back. For example, “Said Samuel ‘Within five years … Baby Jesus will be born.'” READ MORE
. . . BECOMING LIKE JESUS . . .
Jesus grew “in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”
Like Jesus, the children you teach have an important mission to prepare for. What can they learn from Jesus’s example?
-
As you read Luke 2:40, 52, tell the children to listen for the things Jesus did. Invite the children to share ways in which they have grown since they were little. Share your own experience of learning the gospel little by little. Bear your testimony of the Savior.
-
Complete activities that illustrate phrases in Luke 2:40, 52. For example, you could measure each child’s height (“Jesus increased in … stature”) or ask the children to share their favorite scripture (“waxed strong in spirit”). Help the children notice ways they are growing and share these with their families.
-
After reviewing Luke 2:40, 52, invite the children to share what they think Jesus would have been like when He was their age. How would He have treated His mother? His brothers and sisters?
I can follow Jesus’s example.
Even as a young man, Jesus was teaching the gospel in the temple. Similarly, the children in your class have much to teach those around them.
-
Invite a child to come prepared to summarize the story in Luke 2:41–52. To help the children understand the story, teach what the “Father’s business” (verse 49) means. For example, you could tell the children what you or your parents do for a job. What was the job or “business” of Joseph, Jesus’s earthly father? (see Matthew 13:55). What is the business of His Heavenly Father? (see Luke 2:46–49; see also Moses 1:39).
-
With the children, read Luke 2:46–49, and ask, “How was Jesus doing His ‘Father’s business’?” Help the children list or draw on the board ways they can help do Heavenly Father’s business too.
-
To help the children build their confidence that they, like the boy Jesus, can teach the gospel, help them practice teaching each other a principle from For the Strength of Youth.
I can give good gifts to Jesus.
The Wise Men gave Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. How can you use this story to teach the children that they can give gifts to Jesus too—gifts like love, service, and obedience?
-
Show a picture of the Wise Men as you review their story, found in Matthew 2:1–12, with the children. You could show the picture Wise Men Present Gifts (ChurchofJesusChrist.org).
-
Gift wrap pictures or objects that represent gifts we can give to Jesus. Invite the children to help you open the gifts, and discuss how we give these gifts to the Savior.
-
Help each child draw or write a list of gifts they can give Jesus, such as “being a good friend” or “praying.” Invite the children to share their lists with the class and choose one “gift” they will give Jesus today.
-
ACTIVITIES FOR:
Jesus grew in “wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”
I can follow Jesus’s example.
I can give good gifts to Jesus.
POST-AND-PRESENT ACTIVITY. I CAN GROW LIKE JESUS Inch-by-inch growth chart and measure-up bookmark. Youth can contemplate their choices to see if they measure up to how Jesus “Increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52). Only this is tricky as the measure-up wordstrips are written backward; they will have to look at them closer in a mirror to read how they can grow inch-by-inch like Jesus. READ MORE
AGES 1-5 JESUS ONCE WAS A LITTLE CHILD: I can be like Jesus. me & Jesus plaque. Children will love posting their paper-doll image next to Jesus to symbolize they want to be like Him. John 13:15 “I have given you an example …” The picture can be hung on the wall with yarn as a reminder each day. READ MORE
AGES 4-7. FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE OF JESUS Luke 2:52 scripture scroll. Children can want to grow to be like Jesus as they open this scripture scroll, talking about how Jesus read the scriptures from scrolls. We too can read the scriptures to learn to be like Jesus (Luke 2:52). ““Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” READ MORE
YOUTH LESSON ACTIVITY. GROW LIKE JESUS Luke 2:52 bite-size memorize sticker poster. Youth can ponder this scripture “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” All are necessary to balance their life: Mental, physical, spiritual, and social. As they improve in these areas each day they can feel closer to Jesus. READ MORE
SCRIPTURE POSTER/CARD SET. JESUS TEACHES ME TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT to follow His example. John 13:15: “For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.” READ MORE
SINGING TIME ACTIVITY. “COME, FOLLOW ME” song visuals. Youth learn to follow the Savior as they sing “Not only shall we emulate His course while in this earthly state, But when we’re freed from present cares, If with our Lord we would be heirs.” This song illustrates that we can be part of God’s kingdom if we learn to follow in His steps and “Obey his words, ‘Come, follow me.'”READ MORE
