Games are the way to go when you want children to really love your class and sharing time and singing time. They love games. I can’t believe the light in their eyes when they get competing. I have experienced one thing with games, we have to let them feel like they are winning and have little rewards and comments of how well they are doing. I had a big boy competing with a shy girl and she withdrew. I said, “We really need you and I know you can do it. Keep going and you will do fine.” She jumped back in and I had to tell the boy who was being a little bold to let her participate and hold back so she can speak. He did and it worked well. I especially love the Sheep and the Goats game. This is only found in the Sunday Savers New Testament Lesson 27. It is the best game ever!!! I have played it five times a year for the past six years and they all react the same – THEY LOVE IT!!
Thank you so much for all you do for those of us who struggle with creativity! – Melanie Craft
Primary Partners (the first series) of which we re-named Sunday Savers was started when my mother was the ward library-helper. One day a woman came in with a coloring book and asked her to copy a drawing of an elephant for her lesson. She came home and suggested that I create activities for all of the lessons. I then went to my niece, Jennette Guymon-King and asked her to illustrate over 600 activities, one for every lesson in the Primary manuals. She took on the challenge that day and I asked her what should we call it, and she said, “Primary Partners.” That title put us on the bestsellers list once our books came out. Too bad we had to change the name, but we like Sunday Savers just as much.
ONE NOTE THAT IS KIND OF INTERESTING: My mother was around Jennette (her granddaughter) who must have heard her say the word phrase “Primary Partners.” Mother became the primary president and called herself and her counselors “Primary Partners.” The name must have been on the tip of Jennette’s tongue when she came up with the idea. We didn’t brainstorm any other titles. This is the first title mentioned and this is what we went with. Talk about inspiration or influence that is wide-spread. Like a pebble thrown into water that ripples out – sometimes through generations. This is why we value teachers like you Melanie Craft who go all out to make your lessons bright with Jennette’s illustrations. Thanks again!
