LESSON LIFESAVER Activity
Health Care in the Home.
OBJECTIVE: The lesson helps young women recognize the value and benefit of good health care in the home. This activity coordinates with the Teacher presentation in the lesson: “The proper care of an infant or toddler is an important skill. Because most young women will baby-sit children in their own and other families, they should have certain information easily available.”
TO OBTAIN THE ACTIVITY:
Option 1: Download the pattern from this website by clicking HERE for $.50 Then print what you need for your lesson.
Option 2: Copy or print the pattern from the Young Women Fun-tastic! Manual 1 book or CD-ROM.
ACTIVITY: Babysitters Information Sheet
Give young women several copies of the Babysitter’s Information Sheet to take with them when they babysit. This will help them obtain the correct information so they will be better prepared with emergency telephone numbers (e.g., police or fire department, poison control, and family doctor) without having to take time to look up the numbers in the phone book. Young women can post the information by the phone and feel more confident in their child care responsibilities. Parents will also be more at ease knowing the babysitter has this vital information at her fingertips.
THOUGHT TREAT: Red Cross Licorice. (1) Cut two 6-inch pieces of licorice to tie together to make a red cross. (2) Talk about how the American Red Cross has millions of volunteers to help in emergencies in hospitals and community agencies giving: money, blood, training, and first-aid to disaster victims. (3) Obtain several books from the library or American Red Cross to show. (4) Demonstrate a skill or two, giving a Red Cross Licorice Treat to those who have tried the skill.
AMERICAN RED CROSS NURSE NOTES:
Young women can make notes of these activities:
~ Put a girl in bed. Have a nurse show how to care for her.
~ Go visit someone in your area who is in the hospital. Make arrangements ahead of time for this visit so the nurse can tell how she or he cares for the patient. Have a tour of the nurses station and their supply closet (if allowed).
~ Do book reviews on the American Red Cross book or other first-aid book.
~ Have a paramedic come and show emergency health care, CPR, etc.
~ Visit a daycare and talk about how you would save a child’s life if needed.
~ Talk about the emergency items you need in a first-aid kit and how to use these items.
~ Have a nurse tell you the latest items for first-aid kits.
~ Have a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) active volunteer or a member from your local fire department share ideas.
~ Show a film on first-aid skills.
