CHILDREN’S LESSON ACTIVITY. MORONI & JOSEPH SMITH: Hill Cumorah pop-up. Children love to tell how young Joseph was directed by Angel Moroni to find the golden plates that Moroni wrote upon and buried hundreds of years earlier. Now was the time for Joseph to find them and translate them into The Book of Mormon, a history of these people in ancient America. It is another Testament of Jesus Christ.

LESSON LIFESAVER Activity
Moroni and Joseph Smith – Hill Cumorah (pop-up scene)
OBJECTIVE: The lesson helps children understand how we received the Book of Mormon (LESSON IDEAS, below*).
ACTIVITY: Hill Cumorah Two-sided Pop-up Card
This scene helps tell the story of Joseph Smith being led by the Angel Moroni to find the plates that Moroni had written upon and buried in the Hill Cumorah centuries before, roleplaying situations.
TO MAKE Print or copy, color, and cut out the activity on cardstock paper. Fold both Hill Cumorah cards in half and cut slits where indicated. Fold the tab in on one side and glue Moroni burying plates on the tab. Fold the tab in on the other side and glue Angel Moroni guiding Joseph Smith to receive the plates on the tab. Glue Hill Cumorah scenes back to back.
Two-sided Pop-up Scene: A Coming Forth of The Book of Mormon (side one): Moroni buries the plates. Another Testament of Jesus Christ (side two): Joseph Smith receives the plates.

PURCHASE HERE AND USE BOOK OF MORMON QUIZ BEE TO HELP YOUTH LEARN STORIES. You won’t want to miss the MORONI AND THE BOOK OF MORMON PROMISE Quiz-Bee Quiz cards in this deck to match the above lesson.
NOTE: Also shown are children receiving their very own Book of Mormon. This teacher had their names engraved in GOLD on the front. One child commented after teacher said, “You may already have a Book of Mormon.” The child said, “But I don’t have one with my name on it.” Also in this class the teacher cut off a piece of gold glitter paper and wrote the Book of Mormon Promise reference on the back of the paper: Moroni 10:4-5 so children could go home and underline it as the first scripture to underline.
SUGGESTION: Give children the normal size Book of Mormon so you can give them the weekly Book of Mormon SCRIPTURE SCHOLAR pop-ups (to insert into the scripture binding) and bookmarks to get them going on their Come Follow Me scripture reading program (found HERE – SCRIPTURE SCHOLARS). Same goes for the Bible Study and more coming 200 to complete the CFM series.

Suggested Lesson Development

Follow up with the children if you encouraged them to do something during the week.
Mormon Wrote on the Gold Plates
Moroni Instructed Joseph Smith about the Gold Plates
Joseph Translated the Plates
Explain that the writing on the plates was in a language that Joseph could not read. Joseph received a special tool to help him translate the writing on the plates.
-
Do any of you know what the Urim and Thummim are?
Explain that the Urim and Thummim are like special glasses through which Joseph could look to help him translate the ancient writing on the plates. With Heavenly Father’s help and by using the Urim and Thummim, Joseph was able to translate the words on the gold plates into words we could understand. When the translation into English was completed, the book was printed. It was called the Book of Mormon.
Hold up a Book of Mormon. Point out that this book is what Joseph translated from the gold plates.
After he translated the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith returned the plates to Moroni.
The following illustrates the above activity (shown right).

-
Using appropriate pictures, review a few of the Book of Mormon stories the children will learn about this year. For example:

-
Show picture 3-17, Jesus Teaching in the Western Hemisphere (62380; Gospel Art Picture Kit 316). Tell the children that they will learn about Jesus Christ’s visit to the Nephites.
-
-
Have the children draw a picture of the gold plates and the Book of Mormon. Write Gold Plates and Book of Mormon on their pictures.
-
To help the children understand how ancient prophets could write on metal plates, invite each child to try writing his first initial on the bottom of a tin can with a nail. The teacher should demonstrate this first.
-
Review with the children the eighth article of faith. Help those who can to memorize part or all of it.
