. . . GOD WANTS ME TO BE STRONG . . .
Heavenly Father wants me to take care of my body.
Daniel and his friends refused the meat and wine the king offered them because they wanted to follow God’s commandments and avoid harming their bodies. Today the Word of Wisdom helps us avoid substances that would harm our bodies.
-
Share with the children “Daniel and His Friends” (in Old Testament Stories), or summarize Daniel 1:1–17. Invite the children to act out the story. Help them understand how the Lord blessed Daniel and his friends for choosing to obey Him (see verse 17). What blessings do we receive from God when we choose the right?
-
Show the children pictures of things the Word of Wisdom teaches us to eat or use and things it tells us not to eat or use (see Doctrine and Covenants 89). Invite the children to pretend to eat the good things and say no to the bad things. Testify that the Lord blesses us when we care for our bodies. Sing together a song about caring for our bodies, such as “The Lord Gave Me a Temple” or “The Word of Wisdom” (Children’s Songbook, 153, 154–55). What does this song teach us?

ACTIVITIES FOR:
Heavenly Father wants me to take care of my body.
POST-AND-PRESENT. WORD OF WISDOM PIE Sweet Ideas for Staying Healthy – “Dos”. Youth can put the pie pieces together as they learn about God’s law of health found in D&C 89 revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith. The focus is on the Dos rather than the Don’ts. Dos: Vegetables, fruits, grains, wholesome herbs, flesh sparingly. Learn it’s a principle with a promise to be used with prudence and thanksgiving. READ MORE
POST-AND-PRESENT ACTIVITY. MY BODY IS A TEMPLE – Healthy Mind and Body match game. Youth can learn what they should and should not put into their body by matching up these cue cards. God’s law of health is the Word of Wisdom found in Doctrine and Covenants 89. Since we are all created in God’s image we know that our body is a temple and “no unclean thing” should enter our body as it is sacred or God-like (1 Corinthians 3:16-17; Genesis 1:27; 3 Nephi 27:19). READ MORE
AGES 1-5. I LOVE MY BODY poster or coloring page. Children love talking about their body and why they love it. As you talk about each part: mouth, hands, eyes, and ears, talk about the Word of Wisdom. Our body is like Heavenly Father’s body which is like a very special temple. We should take care of it. For example, “We can feel good as we eat fruits and vegetables and grains. We can make our hearts strong as we exercise.” READ MORE
AGES 4-7 WORD OF WISDOM CHOICES voting match. Children can see the whole picture as they put into the slots their vote of what’s good and bad to put into their bodies. Commandments given in God’s law of the Word of Wisdom (D&C 89) tell children that they can be healthy and happy if they put into their bodies good food. Or, they can get sick and not feel healthy or happy if they put bad-for-you or unhealthy things into their body, e.g. coffee, alcohol, and tobacco. READ MORE
AGES 8-11 WORD OF WISDOM Blossom Blessings healthy flowerpot. Youth can place these signs in their flower/plant pots to remind them they can bloom where they are planted as they keep God’s laws (D&C 89) to keep us healthy. The blessings are named on the signs, e.g, “run and not be weary,” “find wisdom and great treasure,” “receive health,” “the destroying angel shall pass by them.” READ MORE
TEENS DRUG-FREE ME! word finds puzzle. Resisting drugs can be a challenge. Black out the Xs. Cross out the drugs. Identify the reasons for drug involvement*. DRUGS: marijuana, tobacco, caffeine, LSD, cocaine, crack, alcohol, heroin, barbiturates, amphetamines, and diet pills. *REASONS: peer pressure, escape, immaturity, availability, advertising appeal. READ MORE
POST-AND-PRESENT ACTIVITY. PROPHETS TAUGHT THE WORD OF WISDOM smile and frown bags. Youth can vote by placing items in the smiling bag (for good choices) and frown bag (for bad choices). The Prophet Joseph Smith revealed to us God’s law of health (D&C 89) warning us of harmful things not to take into our body and healthy foods to eat to stay healthy. As our body is a temple, and we treat it right by obeying the Word of Wisdom the Holy Ghost can guide us which brings us joy. READ MORE
YOUTH ACTIVITY. HEALTHFUL FOOD refrigerator magnets. With these fruit and veggie quotes, youth can be reminded to grab the goodies (food that is good for them) rather than the baddies (foods that are against the Word of Wisdom or foods with low nutrition that can cause weight gain and malnutrition. Have some sample goodies to taste. READ MORE
YOUTH GOAL ACTIVITY. “BLOOMIN’ GOOD BLESSINGS” Word of Wisdom toss and tell game. Youth can learn how to have “health in their navel and marrow to their bones” and more as they play. Rehearse what can happen with God’s law of health found in D&C 89:18-21 (found on the block). As they roll Bloomin’ Good Blessings, they can name a blessing for keeping the Word of Wisdom. As they roll Keep the Word of Wisdom, they can tell the dos and don’ts of God’s law of health. READ MORE
SINGING TIME. “THE LORD GAME ME A TEMPLE” song visuals. Youth can know that their body is a temple for their spirit while on earth. If they keep their “body clean and pure and habit-free” they can go to the temple and “claim blessings promised” to them by Heavenly Father and Jesus their creators. Then when resurrected they can take their body to live “in celestial glory forever” with Them living in “light.” READ MORE
. . . BLESSINGS COME FROM CHOOSING RIGHT . . .
The book of Daniel contains stories of people who chose to follow God’s commandments even when doing so was hard. How will you help the children learn from these examples?
God will bless me as I choose to follow Jesus Christ.
-
Find pictures of the stories in Daniel 1, 3, and 6 (see this week’s activity page, this week’s outline in Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families, or Gospel Art Book, nos. 23, 25, 26). Place the pictures facedown on the board or on the floor. Invite a child to turn over one of the pictures, and help him or her tell the story it represents. (For help, see “Daniel and His Friends,” “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego,” and “Daniel and the Lions’ Den” in Old Testament Stories.) After each story, discuss questions like these: What did the people do to follow the Lord? How did the Lord bless them? Share how you have been blessed for choosing to follow Jesus Christ. Ask the children to share their experiences.
-
Invite the children to act out situations where they can show their faith in God by keeping His commandments. These could include being kind to a sibling, telling someone about the Savior, or praying each night. Show a picture of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego in the fiery furnace (see Gospel Art Book, no. 25), and ask the children to count the people in the furnace. Read Daniel 3:24–25 to find out who else was in the furnace. Share your testimony that the Lord is with us as we follow Him.
Daniel’s Friends: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego
POST-AND-PRESENT. TURN TO ANSWERED PRAYERS scripture stories wheel. Youth can read the story cards and turn to the matching pictures on the wheel to learn stories of WHO in the scriptures, WHAT they prayed about, and HOW their prayers were answered. They were BLESSED because of the promises kept; we too can be blessed in times of need as we turn to prayer. READ MORE
Daniel and the Lions’ Den
POST-AND-PRESENT ACTIVITY. PRAYERS ARE ALWAYS ANSWERED – Bless the Faithful puzzle match. These three stories show answered prayers of the faithful: The City of Enoch Is Taken to Heaven; Daniel and the Lions’ Den; and Pioneers Reach Their New Home. Glue parts of the stories to the backs of each individual puzzle. Read the story from mixed-up puzzle pieces (with puzzle facedown) putting it together faceup. Or, read the clues putting all three puzzles together at the same time. READ MORE
I can do what is right even when it’s hard.
The stories in Daniel 1, 3, and 6 can give the children you teach courage and faith to make good choices, even when they feel alone.
-
Draw on the board several arrows all pointing in the same direction and then one arrow pointing in the opposite direction. How are Daniel and his friends like this one arrow? Invite the children to give examples from the stories in Daniel 1, 3, and 6 (see “Daniel and His Friends,” “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego,” and “Daniel and the Lions’ Den” in Old Testament Stories). Ask the children why they think it might have been hard for Daniel and his friends to make good choices. How did the Lord bless them for choosing the right?
-
Help the children think of situations when they might be pressured to make a wrong choice. Invite them to share experiences when they were blessed for choosing the right even when it was hard. Sing together a song related to this topic, such as “Choose the Right” (Hymns, no. 239).
Heavenly Father wants me to pray often.
Daniel was willing to risk his life so he could pray to Heavenly Father each day. How can you help the children develop a similar desire to pray?
-
Tell the story in Daniel 6 (see “Daniel and the Lions’ Den” in Old Testament Stories), and invite the children to draw a picture of the story. Ask them to use their pictures to tell the story to each other. Why does Heavenly Father want us to pray to Him? Share why prayer is important to you.
-
Talk with the children about times when they can pray, such as when they are scared, when they make mistakes, or when they need help in school. Why is it good to pray in these situations? Teach the children that no matter where they are, they can always pray in their hearts.
-
Sing together a song about prayer, such as “We Bow Our Heads” (Children’s Songbook, 25). Talk with the children about things we can pray for.

-
AGES 1-5. DANIEL AND THE LIONS’ DEN drama scene. Children will be guided by Daniel’s story on faith to know Heavenly Father listens and hears their prayers. Like Daniel, they can pray to Heavenly Father and know that as they make good choices like Daniel, He will protect them and help them know what to do (Daniel 6). Have them pretend to be the lions with big mouths opening up to eat Daniel, and then close their mouths to remind them that Heavenly Father closed the lions’ mouths to protect Daniel. READ MORE
. . . SHARE THE RESTORED GOSPEL . . .
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the kingdom of God on earth.
When Daniel gave his inspired interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, he saw a stone “cut out of the mountain without hands” (Daniel 2:45). This stone represents The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is destined to fill the earth.
-
Read Daniel 2:31–35, 44–45 with the children, and invite them to draw a picture of what Nebuchadnezzar saw in his dream. Ask the children what they learn from these verses about the stone in the dream. Explain that this stone represents The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ask the children to name some things Heavenly Father did to set up His Church in the latter days. To give them ideas, show pictures of events in the Restoration of the Church (see Gospel Art Book, nos. 90–95).
-
Give each child a crumpled-up piece of paper to represent the stone in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. Ask each child to share how he or she knows that the Church was restored by God. As the children share, invite them to give their “stones” to you. Wrap the stones together using tape or string to form a large stone. Testify that as we strengthen our testimonies and share the gospel with others, we unite our faith to help the kingdom of God “[fill] the whole earth” (Daniel 2:35).
