. . . REPENTANCE BRINGS JOY . . .
Repentance brings me joy.
Teaching children about the joy of repentance when they are young can inspire them to repent as they get older.
- Read Alma 36:20 to the children, and ask them to listen for how Alma felt. Invite them to name some things that bring them joy. Show a picture of the Savior, and explain that Alma felt joy because Jesus Christ forgave his sins.
• DOWNLOAD “Alma the Younger’s Road to Repentance Maze (HERE or below)
• DOWNLOAD “Jesus Christ Is Our Savior” forgiveness story of Alma the Younger (HERE or below) - Give each of the children a piece of paper with a happy face on one side and a sad face on the other. Ask them to listen while you read Alma 36:6 and to choose which face they should hold up. Explain that Alma repented and felt joy because Jesus Christ forgave him for making bad choices. Ask the children to listen while you read Alma 36:24 about the good choices he made later and to hold up the correct face.
- Sing together a song about Jesus Christ, such as “He Sent His Son” (Children’s Songbook,34–35). Bear your testimony that Jesus came to earth to save us from sin and bring us joy.

Alma 36
I can be born of God as I am humble and repent.
- Few will have experiences as dramatic as Alma’s conversion. But there are principles in his experience that we can all learn from and apply, because everyone must be “born of God” (Alma 36:23). As you read Alma 36, look for principles you can apply. For instance, how does someone who has been born of God feel about sin? about Jesus Christ? You could also look for changes you might expect to see in the beliefs and actions of someone who is born of God.

I can be “born of God” when I follow Jesus and repent of my sins.
“Conversion … is a change in our very nature. It is such a significant change that the Lord and His prophets refer to it as a rebirth” (“Conversion,” Gospel Topics, topics.ChurchofJesusChrist.org).
-
Review with the children the story of the conversion of Alma the Younger in Alma 36:6–21. Write on slips of paper words and phrases from these verses that describe how Alma felt, and put them on the board. Ask the children to sort the slips of paper into two groups: things Alma felt before he remembered what his father taught about the Savior and things he felt after he remembered. Read together Alma 36:17–20, and testify to the children that Jesus Christ forgives us when we repent.
-
Write Born of God and the following scripture references on the board: 1 John 4:7; Mosiah 5:7; 27:25–26; Alma 5:14; 22:15. Help the children read the verses and look for phrases that describe what it means to be born of God. How does a person act after being born of God? How can we show that we have been born of God?

Alma the Younger Is Converted unto the Lord | Mosiah 27; Alma 36 | Book of Mormon
A Book of Mormon prophet named Alma the Elder worries about his son, who is rebelling against God and setting a bad example for the people. Alma the younger and the sons of Mosiah persecute the people and try to destroy God’s Church. Alma the Elder, his family, and others pray for his son. An angel of the Lord appears to Alma the younger and the sons of Mosiah. The angel commands them to repent and stop persecuting God’s people. Alma the younger is struck with fear and can no longer move or speak. The sons of Mosiah take Alma the younger to his father. Alma the Elder knows God has answered his prayers and that his son is experiencing the power of God. He and others fast and pray for his son to be healed. Alma the younger is troubled about his many sins. His soul suffers until he remembers what his father taught him about Jesus Christ, the Redeemer. He calls upon the Savior for forgiveness. Suddenly Alma the younger’s sorrow and suffering are replaced with joy and peace. Alma the younger wakes up and testifies to the people that the Savior Jesus Christ has taken away his sins and he is a new person. He says he has been born again. The sons of Mosiah repent and believe in God.

. . . SCRIPTURES GUIDE ME . . .
The scriptures can help us every day.
Though many young children can’t read, you can help them gain a testimony of the power of the scriptures to guide their everyday lives.
-
Display a picture of the Liahona (such as Gospel Art Book, no. 68), or invite the children to draw one while they share what they remember about it (see 1 Nephi 16:10, 28–29). Hold up the scriptures, and ask the children to share how the scriptures are like the Liahona. Use Alma 37:38–47 and this week’s activity page to add to this discussion.

Sing together a song about scripture study, such as “Search, Ponder, and Pray” or “As I Search the Holy Scriptures” (Children’s Songbook, 109; Hymns, no. 277). What blessings of scripture study are mentioned in the song?

• “Search, Ponder, and Pray” (HERE or below)
• “As I Search the Holy Scriptures” (COMING SOON)
• “Scripture Power” (HERE or below)
The scriptures have been preserved “for a wise purpose.”
Have you ever thought about what a miracle and blessing it is to have the scriptures today? God has “entrusted [us] with these things, which are sacred” (Alma 37:14). As you read Alma 37, look for the blessings that come from having the scriptures. How have you experienced these blessings? How can we use the scriptures to help “show forth [God’s] power unto future generations”? (Alma 37:18).
In Alma 37:38–47, Alma compares “the word of Christ” to the Liahona. As you ponder this comparison, reflect on the ways you have experienced the miracle and power of Christ’s teachings “day by day” (Alma 37:40).

Alma Counsels His Sons | Alma 36–42 | Book of Mormon
Alma the younger talks to his sons one by one. First, he tells his son Helaman how important it is to be born of God. Alma promises him that if he keeps the commandments of God, he will prosper in the land. Alma hands the plates of brass over to him. It is now Helaman’s responsibility to keep a record of the people. Alma then talks with his son Shiblon, who was faithful even when he had stones thrown at him and was persecuted by the people. Alma encourages him to put his trust in God and promises that God will continue to help him through hard times. Alma testifies that it is through Jesus Christ that everyone can be saved. Alma’s son Corianton did not keep God’s commandments as a missionary. Alma helps him understand how serious it is to commit sexual sin. He pleads with Corianton to repent. Alma tells him that Jesus Christ will come into the world to take away our sins. He talks about the Resurrection, the judgment of God, and God’s justice and mercy. Alma encourages Corianton to look to the Savior for forgiveness.

. . . SHARING TESTIMONIES . . .
Sharing our testimonies of Jesus Christ can strengthen those we love.
-
Alma’s words to his son Shiblon provide a good example of how to strengthen and encourage those we love in living the gospel. Maybe class members could read this chapter and identify how Alma strengthened Shiblon. Alma 38 — Share passages for strengthening family members and friends.
