. . . FOOTSTEPS TO FOLLOW JESUS . . .
Doctrine and Covenants 49:12–14
I can follow Jesus Christ.
Help the children understand that they can follow Jesus Christ by believing in Him, repenting, being baptized, and receiving the Holy Ghost.
-
Display four paper footprints and four pictures (FIND A PATTERN FOR THESE HERE see Footsteps to Follow Jesus singing activity below) representing believing in Jesus Christ, repenting, being baptized, and receiving the Holy Ghost.
DOWNLOAD Follow Jesus Baptism and Covenants Walkabout (HERE or below)Read Doctrine and Covenants 49:12–14, and ask the children to point to the correct picture when each is mentioned in the verses. Let the children help you place the footprints on the floor with the pictures beside them, and invite the children to take turns walking on the footprints. Bear your testimony that when we do the things in these pictures, we are following Jesus Christ.

Use this week’s activity page to make finger puppets that can help the children learn how they can follow Jesus Christ by having faith, repenting, being baptized, and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.
The Lord needs all of us to teach others that they can come unto Him by having faith, repenting, being baptized, and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost (and choosing the right).

-
Invite the children to work in pairs and pretend that one of them wants to know how to follow Jesus Christ. The other child in the pair can teach him or her using Doctrine and Covenants 49:12–14.

. . . MY SPIRITUAL LIGHT . . .
Doctrine and Covenants 50:23–25
My spiritual light can grow brighter and brighter.
Abstract concepts like truth and spirit can be hard for young children to understand, but comparing them to light, as the Lord does in Doctrine and Covenants 50:23–25, can help.
-
Use an activity that illustrates how our spiritual light can grow brighter and brighter. You could show pictures of things that give light (such as a candle, a light bulb, and the sun) and let the children arrange them in increasing order of brightness. Or invite the children to pretend to be lights getting brighter by bending down and slowly standing and stretching up their arms. Help them think of good things they can do to make their spiritual light brighter.
-
Sing with the children a song about their spiritual light, such as “Shine On” (Children’s Songbook, 144). Testify about how Heavenly Father has helped your light grow brighter. Tell the children about the light you see in them.

. . . JESUS IS MY SHEPHERD . . .
Doctrine and Covenants 50:41–44
Jesus Christ loves me.
Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd. We are His sheep, and He loves each of us. What will help the children you teach feel His love for them?

-
Show a picture of Jesus Christ with children (see Gospel Art Book, nos. 47, 84, or 116), and ask the children how they know Jesus loves children. Share how you know Jesus loves you and each of the children in the class.

Make paper sheep, write on them the names of the children in the class, and hide them around the room. Display a picture of the Savior, and read Doctrine and Covenants 50:41–42. Help the children understand what these verses teach about how Jesus Christ feels about them. Let them find the sheep around the room and put them on the board near the picture of Jesus so “none of them … shall be lost” (verse 42).

. . . MARRIAGE OF MAN AND WOMAN . . .
Doctrine and Covenants 49:15–17
Marriage between man and woman is essential to God’s plan.
The children you teach may face confusing messages about marriage. Doctrine and Covenants 49:15–17 can help them understand how the Lord feels about marriage.

-
Explain that the Shakers were a group that believed people should not get married (see the section heading to Doctrine and Covenants 49). Invite the children to find things the Lord taught about marriage in Doctrine and Covenants 49:15–17.
-
Help the children understand what the phrase “marriage is ordained of God” means. Invite them to work in pairs to compare Doctrine and Covenants 49:15–17 with the first three paragraphs of “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.” Why is marriage so important to Heavenly Father?
-
Sing together the second verse of “Families Can Be Together Forever” (Children’s Songbook, 188) or another song about families. Help the children think of ways they can prepare to be married in the temple someday and have an eternal family.

Because marriage is fundamental to Heavenly Father’s plan, Satan is eager to create confusion about it. Your class might benefit from making a list on the board of truths the Lord has revealed about marriage. For example, what truths about marriage do we learn from Doctrine and Covenants 49:15–17? Other helpful scriptures include Genesis 2:20–24; 1 Corinthians 11:11; or others found in “Marriage, Marry” in the Guide to the Scriptures (scriptures.ChurchofJesusChrist.org). Class members could also find truths in “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.” Based on what we learn from these resources, why is marriage between a man and a woman essential to God’s plan? (see “Additional Resources”).

. . . TRUE OR FALSE TEACHINGS? . . .
Doctrine and Covenants 49:5–23
The truths of the gospel can help me recognize false teachings.
Before joining the Church, Leman Copley had been part of a religious group known as the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, also known as the Shakers (see “Leman Copley and the Shakers,” Revelations in Context, 117–21). After a conversation with Leman, Joseph Smith sought clarification from the Lord about some of the Shakers’ teachings, and the Lord responded with the revelation in section 49.
You can find some of the Shakers’ beliefs mentioned in the heading to section 49. Consider marking or noting the truths in verses 5–23 that correct those beliefs. Think about other false teachings or traditions in the world today. What gospel truths can help you guard yourself against them?
The Lord’s teachings can protect me from Satan’s deceptions.
The new converts in Ohio were eager to receive the spiritual manifestations promised in the scriptures, but Satan was also eager to deceive them. They wondered, When someone shouts or faints, is that the influence of the Spirit?
Imagine that you were asked to help these new converts understand how to recognize true manifestations of the Holy Ghost and avoid being deceived by Satan’s imitations.

. . . TEACH & LEARN BY THE SPIRIT . . .
Doctrine and Covenants 50:13–24
Teachers and learners are edified together by the Spirit.
One way you might study Doctrine and Covenants 50:13–24 is to draw a picture of a teacher and a learner and, next to each, make a list of words and phrases from these verses that teach you something about gospel learning and teaching. When have you had experiences that taught you the importance of the Spirit in teaching and learning? Consider what you can do to improve your efforts as a gospel learner and teacher.
-
The Lord’s instruction about preaching and receiving truth might provide a good opportunity to discuss the shared role you as a teacher and the class members have in fostering gospel learning. Consider asking class members to review Doctrine and Covenants 50:13–22 in pairs and discuss the roles of the Spirit, teachers, and learners. A few pairs could share with the class what they learned. What are some “other way[s]” we sometimes try to teach or learn the gospel? (verse 17). How can we be better at receiving by the Spirit? What are we inspired to do in our homes and at church to better teach and learn the gospel?
