3 Nephi 27:1–22
I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ.
How can the Savior’s words to His disciples help the children understand the importance of belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ?
-
Ask each child to say his or her name. Why are our names important? Tell them that Jesus’s disciples wanted to know what they should name Christ’s Church. Read to them the Savior’s response in 3 Nephi 27:7. Who did Jesus say His Church should be named after?
-
Make a badge that says “I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” for each child to wear home. Let the children color their badges. Sing “The Church of Jesus Christ” (Children’s Songbook, 77) as a class.
DOWNLOAD “The Church of Jesus Christ” song visuals (HERE or below) to teach this song.Tell why you are thankful to belong to the Church, and ask the children why they are thankful for the Church.
-
Help the children put together the puzzle on this week’s activity page. Explain that Jesus wants His Church to be built on His gospel, and use the activity page to talk to the children about what that means.
I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ.
Consider how you will help the children you teach recognize the great blessings that come from being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ.
-
Help the children read 3 Nephi 27:3, looking for the question Jesus’s disciples asked Him. Then invite them to look in 3 Nephi 27:5–8 for the answer. According to these verses, why is the name of the Church important?
-
Help the children think of different groups they belong to, such as a family or a Primary class. Ask them to tell you what they like about belonging to each group. Ask the children to help you write each word of the name of the Church on a separate piece of paper. Then mix the papers up, and invite the children to arrange these words in order. What blessings have we received because we are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

. . . GOSPEL JOY . . .
Living the gospel brings me joy.
The happiness of the people described in 4 Nephi can help the children learn about the joy that comes from living the gospel.
-
Invite the children to talk about what makes them happy. To tell the children about the happiness of the people in 4 Nephi, read key phrases from verses 2–3 and 15–17. You could also refer to “Chapter 48: Peace in America” (Book of Mormon Stories, 136–37, or the corresponding video on ChurchofJesusChrist.org). Emphasize that the people were happy because they were converted to the Lord, they lived the commandments, and they loved one another.
-
Show pictures of happy people. Explain that the people in 4 Nephi had almost 200 years of happiness because they all tried their best to live the gospel. Help the children think of some commandments they could obey. For example, you could read them 4 Nephi 1:15 to teach that the people didn’t fight with each other anymore. Invite the children to act out obeying the commandments they thought of. Sing together a song about the joy that comes from living the gospel, such as “When We’re Helping” (Children’s Songbook, 198).

Read phrases from 4 Nephi 1:24–29, 34–35, and 43 that describe what happened when some of the Nephites stopped keeping the commandments. As you do, invite the children to make a sad face when they hear something that sounds unhappy. Testify that keeping the commandments leads to happiness.

. . . HAPPY TESTIMONY . . .
Conversion to Jesus Christ and His gospel leads to unity and happiness.
Can you imagine what it would have been like to live in the years following the Savior’s visit? How did the people maintain this divine peace for so long—nearly 200 years? As you study 4 Nephi 1:1–18, consider marking or noting the choices that people made in order to experience this blessed life.

Ponder what you can do to help your family, ward, or community live in greater unity and happiness, as the people in 4 Nephi did. What teachings of Jesus Christ can you live more fully in order to accomplish this goal? What can you do to help others understand and live these teachings?
The account in 4 Nephi illustrates the joy that can come into our lives—as individuals, as families, and as a ward or stake—as we strive to be more fully converted to Jesus Christ. Consider asking class members to search 4 Nephi 1:1–18 and write on the board the blessings that came to the people when they were all converted to the Lord.

. . . BOOK OF MORMON & RESTORATION . . .
The Book of Mormon is a sign that God’s latter-day work is being fulfilled.
-
Perhaps you could start a discussion about 3 Nephi 29–30 by talking about signs. For example, class members could name signs that let us know that a storm is coming or that the seasons are changing. Then they could read 3 Nephi 29:1–3 to learn what is signified by the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, which Mormon called “these sayings” (see also 3 Nephi 21:1–7). What message did the Lord give in 3 Nephi 29:4–9 to those who would “spurn” or “deny” the work of God in the last days? How does reading the Book of Mormon daily strengthen our faith in those things that other people “spurn” or “deny” in our day? You may want to invite class members to read the Lord’s invitation in 3 Nephi 30 and share how the Book of Mormon has helped them accept this invitation.

. . . NAME OF CHRIST’S CHURCH . . .
The Church of Jesus Christ is called in His name and is built upon His gospel.
-
Discussing the name of the Church might deepen your class members’ appreciation for their membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Consider inviting class members to list names of various organizations and describe what the names tell us about those organizations. Then class members could read 3 Nephi 27:1–12, looking for what the Savior taught about the name of His Church. They could also share what it means to them to be members of Christ’s Church. What does it mean to take His name upon ourselves?
-
Here’s another way to discuss the importance of the name of the Savior’s Church. After a discussion of truths found in 3 Nephi 27:1–22, you could write the full name of the Church on the board. Then class members could select words in the name and suggest how each word helps us know who we are or what we believe. President M. Russell Ballard’s statement in “Additional Resources” could help. Why is it important to use the name of the Church as we share our beliefs with others?
-
After explaining that His Church must be “built upon [His] gospel” (3 Nephi 27:10), the Savior described what His gospel is. Perhaps you could invite class members to share how they might explain to a friend what the gospel is. Then you could invite them to search 3 Nephi 27:13–22, looking for how the Savior defined His gospel. How would we summarize what the Savior said? As we study the Savior’s definition of the gospel, what insights do we gain about how to live the gospel in our daily lives?
