“Treasure-house of Truth”

Russell M. Nelson said, “The Articles of Faith is ‘A treasure-house of truth’ (in 13 statements) written by the Prophet Joseph Smith, printed in the Times and Seasons in 1842, teaches us to follow our Savior by making the sacrifices necessary to lose ourselves in unselfish service to others.”

President Nelson Has Testified of the Articles of Faith, as Prophet, in the Salt Lake City Featured Stories – 5 March 2025

Celebrate 183 years since Joseph Smith’s Articles of Faith were first published by reading a modern-day Prophet’s witness of their truth

“WE BELIEVE”

President Dallin H. Oaks proclaimed in his talk about THE ARTICLES OF FAITH, “For us, the truth about the nature of God and our relationship to Him is the key to everything else. … Our Articles of Faith, our … declaration of belief, begins as follows:

‘We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.'”

See News Release Fundamental Premises of Our Faith (HERE).

ARTICLES OF FAITH 1:1

GODHEAD

Russel M. Nelson said, “Our Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son Jesus Christ are ready to bless you. It is my promise that They will not forsake you. When life feels difficult or even impossible, remember what you have been promised in scripture: Through Christ, you can do all things!” (Social media post, October 2023).

YOUTH CAN TEACH about three separate personages and the plan for our salvation.

Articles of Faith 1:1 “We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son Jesus Christ,  and in the Holy Ghost.”

SPOTLIGHT the “I Lived in Heaven” song that follows (to discuss this #1 Article of Faith).

See other song visuals and LESSON LIFESAVER Activities in the INDEX under these subjects: GODHEAD Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ; Holy Ghost; Jesus Savior; Follow Jesus

SING & SPEAK about the song “I Lived in Heaven”

QUESTION.  WHAT happened in heaven before we came to earth?

ANSWERS:
• We lived in heaven with Heavenly Father and Jesus.
• Heavenly Father presented a “beautiful plan” for us to come to earth.
• He would send His son Jesus to be our SAVIOR to help us return to our heavenly home.

ARTICLES OF FAITH 1:2

AGENCY & ACCOUNTABILITY

Russell M. Nelson said, “Repentance is the key to avoiding misery inflicted by traps of the adversary. The Lord does not expect perfection from us at this point in our eternal progression. But He does expect us to become increasingly pure. Daily repentance is the pathway to purity, and purity brings power. Personal purity can make us powerful tools in the hands of God (We Can Do Better and Be Better,” April 2019 general conference).

YOUTH CAN TEACH. God has given us the agency like Adam and Eve to be responsible for our own choices. Heavenly Father promises us that as we keep His commandments, we can obtain His blessings.

Articles of Faith 1:2 “We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.”

SPOTLIGHT the “Repentance” song that follows (to discuss this #2 Article of Faith).

See other song visuals and LESSON LIFESAVER Activities in the INDEX under these subjects: REPENTANCE

SING & SPEAK about the song “Repentance”

QUESTION. HOW can repenting make us strong and happy?

ANSWERS:
• When we say, “I’m sorry,” our heart and mind get stronger.

• We begin to know what is wrong and right.
• It makes it easier to repent, change, and pray.
• Heavenly Father will give us strength to choose the right.

ARTICLES OF FAITH 1:3

ATONEMENT

Russel M. Nelson said, “Without our Redeemer’s infinite Atonement, not one of us would have hope of ever returning to our Heavenly Father. Without His Resurrection, death would be the end. Our Savior’s Atonement made eternal life a possibility and immortality a reality for all.” (“Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives, April 2018 general conference).

YOUTH CAN TEACH that Jesus Christ volunteered to save us all from death. Also, He can save us from sin as we repent and strive to. become like Him.

Articles of Faith 1:3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.”

SPOTLIGHT the “I Stand All Amazed” song that follows (to discuss this #3 Article of Faith).

See other song visuals and LESSON LIFESAVER Activities in the INDEX under these subjects: Atonement, Jesus Savior

QUESTION.  WHY are we so happy to have Jesus as our Savior?

ANSWERS:
• Jesus left His heavenly home and kept all of His Father’s commandments to be our Savior.
• Jesus prayed and suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane so we can repent and be forgiven.
• Jesus was crucified on the cross for us so we can be resurrected.
• As we follow Jesus, we can be with Him in heaven.

ARTICLES OF FAITH 1:4

FIRST PRINCIPLES

Russell M. Nelson said, “When you and I also enter that path, we have a new way of life. We thereby create a relationship with God that allows Him to bless and change us. The covenant path leads us back to Him. If we let God prevail in our lives, that covenant will lead us closer and closer to Him. All covenants are intended to be binding. They create a relationship with everlasting ties”
(“The Everlasting Covenant,” Liahona, October 2022).

Also, DOWNLOAD this activity “Heaven’s Gate to the Strait & Narrow Path – baptismal covenants reminder (HERE or right) to match the above quote by President Russell M. Nelson.

YOUTH CAN TEACH four principles that will lead us back to our heavenly home to have eternal life with Heavenly Father and Jesus. These principles are in Article of Faith 4.

Articles of Faith 1:4 We believe in the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, FAITH in the Lord Jesus Christ; second REPENTANCE; third, BAPTISM by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth Laying on of hands for the gift of the HOLY GHOST.

ARTICLES OF FAITH 1:5

CALLED OF GOD

Russel M. Nelson said, “When a President of the Church passes away, there is no mystery about who is next called to serve in that capacity. There is no electioneering and no campaigning, but only the quiet workings of a divine plan of succession — put in place by the Lord Himself”

(President Nelson’s first public address as President of the Church, January 2018).

YOUTH CAN TEACH that men must have God’s authority of the Aaronic or Melchezidek Priesthood to appoint callings and administer priesthood ordinances.

Articles of Faith 1:5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.”

SPOTLIGHT the “Priesthood Is Restored” song that follows (to discuss this #5 Article of Faith).

See other song visuals and LESSON LIFESAVER Activities in the INDEX under these subjects: Priesthood, Ordinances

SING & SPEAK about the song “The Priesthood Is Restored”

QUESTION.  WHY was God’s priesthood taken from the earth, and why was it restored in these latter-days (to stay)?

ANSWERS. See these answers in the lesson INDEX under the topics: Priesthood, and Church of Jesus Christ Restoration

• Talk about the Apostasy Mirror using the teaching tool (HERE or below) to explain why a restoration was necessary.

• When Jesus was on the earth, He organized His Church with 12 apostles giving them the priesthood to bless and administer ordinances like baptism, the sacrament, and healing of the sick.

Talk about the Apostasy Mirror and why the Priesthood needed to be RESTORED.

APOSTASY MIRROR Message.

When Christ died, the Apostles held up the mirror and took care of the affairs of the Church.

When the Apostles were killed, the mirror fell and broke, thus resulting in the Apostasy.

But people still saw good in the mirror and took pieces and built around them, resulting in the many churches of today. This exemplifies the reason we needed a Restoration and not just a reformation . . . because a mirror that has been broken cannot be repaired – it must be replaced.

ARTICLES OF FAITH 1:6

ORGANIZATION OF THE CHURCH

Russell M. Nelson said, “The Lord Jesus Christ, whose Church this is, appoints prophets and apostles to communicate His love and teach His laws. … It is precisely because we do care deeply about all of God’s children that we proclaim His truth. We may not always tell people what they want to hear. Prophets are rarely popular. But we will always teach the truth”
(“
The Love and Laws of God,” Brigham Young University devotional, September 2019).

YOUTH CAN TEACH that Jesus Christ organized His church according to Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation. After He and His apostles died, His Church was lost (see APOSTASY MIRROR activity HERE or above in Articles of Faith 1:6). Then, when Joseph Smith asked God in the Sacred Grove which church was true, Jesus allowed His church to be restored just like His original Church (never to be lost again).

Articles of Faith 1:6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church.”

SPOTLIGHT “The Church of Jesus Christ” song that follows to discuss #6 Articles of Faith).

See other song visuals and LESSON LIFESAVER Activities in the INDEX under these subjects: CHURCH

SING & SPEAK about the song “The Church of Jesus Christ”

QUESTION. WHY is it important to belong to the CHURCH of Jesus Christ?

ANSWERS:
“I know who I am.” I am a son or daughter of God, our eternal heavenly father.

“I know God’s plan.” The Father’s plan of salvation is for us to come to earth to learn to be like Him and His Son, Jesus Christ, and return to our heavenly home.
“I’ll follow Him in faith.” Heavenly Father sent Jesus to show us how to live and learn of the Father and His plan of happiness for us.

“I believe in the Savior, Jesus Christ.”
DOWNLOAD this activity to teach I CHOOSE TO FOLLOW JESUS premortal life puppet show (HERE or below).

This shows the WAR IN HEAVEN where we lived with Heavenly Father and Jesus. There, we could choose:
– To follow Satan (who wanted to force us to choose the right). Or,
– To follow Jesus Christ (to give us agency, to make our own choices). Heavenly Father thought this was the best plan (so we could earn our way back to heaven).

“I’ll honor His name.” I will study the scriptures and learn of Jesus Christ so I can learn to live as He did.

“I’ll do what is right; I’ll follow His light.” I will study the scriptures and learn of Jesus Christ so I can learn to live as He did.

“His truth I will proclaim.” I can be a disciple of Jesus Christ by sharing His gospel.

ARTICLES OF FAITH 1:7

SPIRITUAL GIFTS

Russel M. Nelson said, I urge you, with all the hope of my heart, to pray to understand your spiritual gifts — to cultivate, use and expand them, even more than you ever have. You will change the world as you do so”
(
Social media post, October 2018).

YOUTH CAN TEACH that God has given us each spiritual gifts that will help us in our mortal journey. Heavenly Father has not left us here alone, but gave us loved ones and talents we can develop. Study your Patriarchal Blessing to discover many of these and listen to your heart’s desire for other gifts from God.

Articles of Faith 1:7 We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.”

SPOTLIGHT the “Dearest Children, God Is Near You” song that follows (to discuss this #7 Article of Faith).

See other song visuals and LESSON LIFESAVER Activities in the INDEX under these subjects: Prayer, Blessings, Heavenly Father, Adversity

SING & SPEAK about the song “Dearest Children, God Is Near You”

QUESTION.  HOW do we know that our Heavenly Father is with us, having the Holy Ghost tell our mind and our heart what we need to know?

• As we are HONESTLY seeking God’s help, we will HONESTLY try to choose the right.
• Good choices give us the RIGHT to ask for blessings. Then we can be guided in the RIGHT direction.
• Our guardian angels watch us and record our actions night and day.
• God wants to teach us through His Spirit to keep His commandments.
• Then, we can rejoice in the coming of the Lord, in Zion’s cause.

ARTICLES OF FAITH 1:8

SCRIPTURES

Russell M. Nelson said, “As a companion scripture to the Bible, the Book of Mormon testifies that all human beings are sons and daughters of a loving Father in Heaven, that He has a divine plan for our lives, and that His Son, Jesus Christ, speaks today as well as in days of old”
(“The Restoration of the Fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ: A Bicentennial Proclamation to the World,” April 2020).

YOUTH CAN TEACH that the scriptures are like the iron rod (the word of God) that can safely guide us through this earth life and prepare us to return to our heavenly home. The Bible and the Book of Mormon are two testaments of Jesus Christ.

Articles of Faith 1:8 “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

SPOTLIGHT “Book of Mormon Stories” song that follows to discuss #8 Articles of Faith).

See other song visuals and LESSON LIFESAVER Activities in the INDEX under these subjects: BOOK OF MORMON

SING & SPEAK about the song “Book of Mormon Stories”

QUESTION. WHY IS THE BOOK OF MORMON ANOTHER TESTAMENT OF JESUS CHRIST?

ANSWERS:
• The Book of Mormon stories tell of righteous people who believed in Jesus Christ.
• They were taught by prophets called of God to tell others about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
• First, in 600 B.C. (before Christ’s birth), Lehi warned the people of Jerusalem to repent. Because they rejected his message, he had to take his family and flee into the wilderness for safety.

• From there, Lehi and his son Nephi built a ship and sailed their family to the “promised land” of the Americas.

• After Lehi died, the family divided into Nephites (descendants of Nephi) and the Lamanites (descendants of Nephi’s brother Laman).

• The Book of Mormon tells of their trials and testimonies of Jesus Christ. In Moroni 10:4-5, we learn how to gain a testimony of this great Book, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, known as “The Book of Mormon promise.”
DOWNLOAD this Moroni 10:4-5 scripture poster/card set (HERE or below)

DOWNLOAD the activity Two Testaments of Jesus Christ post-and-present (HERE or below).

• This is where the Articles of Faith 1:8 tells of these two testaments of Jesus, the Bible and The Book of Mormon (shown above).

ARTICLES OF FAITH 1:9

REVELATION

Russel M. Nelson said, “One of the things the Spirit has repeatedly impressed upon my mind since my new calling as President of the Church is how willing the Lord is to reveal His mind and will. The privilege of receiving revelation is one of the greatest gifts of God to His children. Through the manifestations of the Holy Ghost, the Lord will assist us in all our righteous pursuits”
(“Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives,” April 2018 general conference).

YOUTH CAN TEACH that a personal testimony is a witness of truth revealed to us by the Holy Ghost. We can know that The Book of Mormon is true, and The Church of Jesus Christ is true, and gospel principles, and any other righteous desire for truth (depending upon our righteousness).
DOWNLOAD Moroni 10:4-5 poster/card set (HERE or above)

Articles of Faith 1:8 “We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.”

SPOTLIGHT “Testimony” song that follows to discuss #9 Articles of Faith).

See other song visuals and LESSON LIFESAVER Activities in the INDEX under these subjects: HOLY GHOST, and TESTIMONY

SING & SPEAK about the song “Testimony”

QUESTION. HOW DO WE GAIN A TESTIMONY OF GOD THE FATHER & THE SON AND HIS GOSPEL?

ANSWERS:
• The Holy Ghost (the Spirit) is a member of the Godhead and will bring to us a testament of Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.
• The Spirit testifies of these God-personages that they are the creators of our spirit and body and God’s plan of salvation.
• The Spirit testifies to us of God’s prophets and the words they speak that are true.

• When we partake of the sacrament each week and remember Jesus as our Savior, we can promise to keep God’s commandments so that we can have His Spirit to be with us (3 Nephi 18:7, 11).
DOWNLOAD the Remember Jesus – Sacrament Symbols puzzle (HERE or below)

• The Spirit witnesses to our minds and hearts messages from above. • As we search and ponder the scriptures, we can know if they are true (Moroni 10:4-5).
• The Spirit warns of danger, calms our fears, and makes us feel that heaven is near.
• The constant companionship (gift) of the Holy Ghost can be given to us in a priesthood blessing after we are baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Because of the covenant we made at baptism to keep God’s commandments, we are promised that this Spirit can always be with us.
